N-fab isn’t what it use to be! I’ve been running their steps on my JKU for 6+ years without issues like people have now.....
Sad.

What gets me is when they dont include or use bolts that are stainless. Even if a product is crap, atleast include stainless hardware...
Stainless isn't always the best thing since it can cause galvanic corrosion on what its connected to. Cadmium plating is probably better in many cases.

I'm not in anyway saying stainless is bad. Just that its not always the right choice.

Not me - stainless is weaker- to get the strength needed, you typically lose some corrosion resistance and increase the cost (quite a bit).
I'd not want stainless in any suspension or steering pieces.

Because of low carbon content, many stainless steel alloys cannot be hardened through heat treatment.
The stainless alloys used in bolts are slightly stronger than an un-hardened (grade 2) steel but a lot weaker than hardened steel bolt.

I like the cheap fasteners and then choose my own. I may want to plate them, powder coat them, whatever. Having to pay for expensive and usually weaker stainless....... naw.

Not common in automotive any more due to health/EPA stuff. Still used by military, aircraft, etc. but rare in automotive. Zinc is the thing, or black oxide if they want cheap and don't care after a year or two.

Galvanic action requires the presence of water (see my other posts on that from a year or so ago) Stainless can be a problem with aluminum but you can take steps to prevent or slow it.
It's otherwise not a problem with most other metals found in cars and trucks. Isolate it from the aluminum electrically and/or keep it dry. I have stainless screws holding the aluminum rails in my truck.

I agree entirely. 75% of the parts I buy that come "powder coated" have a garbage coat on them. It really is annoying.

I did a really thorough prep and rattle can rustoleum job on my TnT front bumper on my TJ 8 years ago and it's held up better than almost any part that came to me "professionally powder coated."

I just spend the extra on raw aluminum everything now, if it's available.
Lack of proper prep. There's a lot of oils that get into the surface of steels, that and carbon at the surface. It takes a lot to get those oils out, just washing won't do it. The surface is actually porous and the oils used in manufacturing processes soak in. I have gallons of metal wash, metal prep and caustic soaps by the 5 gallon bucket.

I powder coated all of the suspension parts of my 70 when I restored the steering and suspension, and even powder coated the front coil springs. To this day, it's all held up and that was over a decade ago. I powder coat starter frames and other abused parts. It's in the prep (and decent powders)

I've gotten to the point I powder coat my own stuff, end up plating many of the fasteners as I know the cheap thin plating won't hold up and paint the other stuff. VHT epoxy paint holds up extremely well on parts exposed to the elements. It's what's on my lower control arms of the JT.
The bolts and nuts and screws that rust, I just plate them and be done with it.

So much comes down to lack of proper prep. Money, time, and staff, and in some cases, expensive equipment. I had a heck of a time finding the sealed stainless steel tank heaters I have to use for my cleaning solutions.

Living in Northern California, I would never have know these item rust without reading this thread. My Arcus bumper is looking good. I had N-Fabs on my 4Runner for 5 years no issues. Although, I don’t exactly hold N-Fab in high regard.

You watched me prep my car for painting? I had no idea anyone was watching when I had the hood all done, blocked, primed, then went out a could of weeks later and started all over again on the hood and spent a weekend......... on the hood. It took me just short of a year to prep that car for the paint. A friend also in the restoration business told me I was going to sand the steel right off the car, then at the first show, said he was amazed there was any paint left on it when he saw me cleaning it.

I posted a pic to FB yesterday of a car I sold a couple of years ago. A guy commented that he wanted to buy it but it sold so fast he didn't get around to it.

No, Rick, it's an OBSCESSION! An affliction! An illness. Nothing is "good enough".

Tell me about it. Half the shit I ordered from Quadratec, Bestop, and Northridge were missing parts, JL instructions even tho it stated JT on the item description etc.. I expected more from these ā€˜reputable’ companies.

This. Much safer in a collision with 40s. Prius gets crushed and not stuck in grill.

This is why I need 40's. 37's just aren't safe. See how the steering wheel moves as I hit a bump? could you imagine how bad it would be if it were a larger bump?????? THINK OF THE CHILDREN!!!!!!
