Looking at upgrading to 35” tires and am unable to decide which may be the better fit. Use: mainly daily driving with occasional light off-roading. I will be towing a trailer through BLM land, fire roads, etc. out west occasionally. Not looking for mud terrain tires and would like to keep them light. I want something that is severe snow rated and good in rain as well.

My JL had BF Goodrich and they were great through the 30k miles I put on them prior to trading for the Gladiator. My JTR has Falken Wildpeaks which have been fine for 4300 miles,

Size: 315/70R17 or 35-12.50 R17
Choices:
BF Goodrich All-Terrain KO2
Falken Wildpeak ATW3
Goodyear Wrangler Ultraterrain AT

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

I’m running Falken Wildpeak ATW3 on the wife’s JLU in 35/12.50r20. They have been on for about 5,000 and love them. They are wearing great, balanced with a little weight and run smoother than the 285/70r17 BFG AT KO2 on my stock JLR.

Have had great luck with General Grabber ATX (and the older AT2 model). I have the AT3W wildpeaks on my F150 and I haven't been terribly impressed. Not as good on snow/ice as the ATX, and they ride a bit more rough when cold/ after sitting, they are the E rated version. Im actually more impressed with the Wildpeak MTs on my JTR than I am the Wildpeak AT3s.

Bigger, heavier tires give off-road capabilities, but cost gas mileage which may become a concern for daily driving. Hence, Jeep puts bigger tires on the specialty models like Rubicon but somewhat smaller, much lighter tires with moderate tread patterns on "low line" and towing/hauling models that are likely to spend most of their lives on paved roads, or graded dirt roads.

Those choices are 2 light weight tires and one heavy tire. I always go for the lightest weight tire possible, ie. C range.... to avoid hurting acceleration and to counteract the negative gearing effect... Look at the tire weight...

PS. The Falkens in the stock Jeep size are not bad in weight -- probably requested by Jeep.... the other sizes can be very heavy... be careful.

Tire weights from either manufacturers website or Discount tire in the case of the Goodyear’s as I was unable to find that tire on Goodyear’s site.

Stock Wildpeak ATW3 285/70R17 - 62.8
BF Goodrich: 315/70R17 C - 64.6 / 35x12.50R17 E - 66.34
Falken: 315/70R17 E - 72.8 / 35x12.50R17 E -75.4
Goodyear: 35x12.50R17 E - 68

I am well aware of mileage drop, I average around 20k a year. The weight of the Falken is a big hit, I looked at Nitto Ridge Grappler as well but they are also heavy and do not have the snow rating.

The wheels are roughly 10lbs heavier, the better half is inheriting my wheels and tires for her Sahara.

Keep in mind that weight isn't always equal. Weight on the tire will always be worse than weight on the wheel because it's further out from the hub and weight on the tread is worse than sidewall for the same reason. Larger tires are the worst of all because you're moving the heaviest part of the entire assembly further outward.

Going with a C-rated tire is frequently a good move because they have fewer tread plies (and less tread weight) where you're less likely to have issues and similar sidewall plies where you will more frequently see damage from rocks.

I've gotta recommend the Yokohama Geolandar X-AT in 35x12.5r17

Ive had them for about two months now and they're fantastic. Havent taken them down a trail yet but they're nice and quiet on the road.

From your list, my vote would be the BF Goodrich KO2 315/70R17C. Highly rated tire.

I'm glad to hear you were able to get the weights from the website. There are many good choices when it comes to tires these days, which one is right for you depends on your needs. PM coming you way.

The Wildpeak MT's have impressed the shit out of me. They are a much better tire than BFG MT's. Looking to stay with the Wildpeaks or maybe Nitto Trail grappler MT'swhen I go bigger
