I have 23 JTS, bought a dog ramp for my dog. I saw a post on here where someone had their rear doors open to what looked like 90 degrees. I asked about it and he said to just put an extension on the strap. However, even removing the strap I couldn’t get it anywhere close to that, and there was no issue with the wiring harness. I’m afraid to push it any harder bc it feels like the resistance is coming from the door hinges and I haven’t even made my first payment yet, thus I don’t wanna begin damaging it.
Is there a different hinge I can buy, or should I push that thing harder? The alternative would be to return the dog ramp and just lift Meatball in and out, but I’m thinking it would be a whole lot cooler if he could do it himself.
Any advice?

You need to remove the bolts on the door stops, and push them in to the door. Careful though, without these or the strap connected the doors will open a full 180 degrees

@Like-a-virgin i was the one that told you about the door strap extensions. I didn’t mention this step but if you do as Cheffrey85 describes then it will work exactly as you want with the strap extension to prevent over extending.

if you go back and look at the pics I posted for you, that piece has been disconnected

Hey man! I am an infant re auto stuff but y’all are really educating me. Gvsukids has been a godsend. I’m gonna go out in the morning and play around with it. I’ve got zip ties and I’ll figure out which tool I need for the bolts (wrench? That little thing I got w my jeep? Torque wrench? <——see???). Please keep an eye out on this thread tomorrow because I’m sure I’ll be on here begging for help. Thanks so much you guys.

And it’s okay to leave them undone as long as I’m aware of the possibility of overextending the strap or the wiring harness? I’ll be able to close the door without re-doing those bolts back?

I think there are strap extensions or a way to extend the existing strap. Pretty sure theres a couple threads of it here. Maybe someone in the know will link it.

FWIW, you could have just asked further questions in the original thread using either a reply to someone’s post or using @HooliganActual (or any user name) or send a PM to someone if you have more questions. You might get better, quicker responses to your questions versus starting a loosely related new thread.

Generally speaking, most people on here want to be helpful and are happy to help if they can. Personally, I have owned Jeep products for 40 years, currently own 3, am a retired engineer and have a lot of experience with these vehicles. Others like @ShadowsPapa, @Gvsukids, @WILDHOBO, @Mr Bill and so many others can probably solve every problem you can throw at them.

So don’t be shy and keep asking those questions.

Yeah, that’s what I was referring to. He and I had already discussed this very thing with pics in a different thread.

The answer is yes. That piece does two things, assists in preventing overextension AND it is spring loaded to help pull the door closed. That spring loaded was is why @kevman65 suggested looping a zip tie through the bolt hole because the spring will pull it into the door up to the bracket portion and can be a bear to pull back out.

Thanks. I’m even learning how to use the forum. Didn’t know about PM or @username. Y’all keep educating me and expect a learning curve!

Put a zip tie through the bolt hole on the door stop. Make it easier to pull back out if/when you want to reattach them.
So do you shove that whole assembly down into the hole in the door and fish it out later hoping the zip tie will give you a better chance at finding it, or does the zip tie stay somewhere, or something different? I did just now go outside and look at it and saw that there is a 6-sided hex bolt holding the door assembly to the frame, so I know what tool I need and what to undo.

Also, do I put the bolt back into the hole in the frame, or should I keep it somewhere else like that thing under the drivers side rear seat with a s-load of slots for bolts?

Yes you can push the door stop into the door. As stated it is almost impossible to pull out without assistance.

You can put the bolt back in so you know exactly where it is if you want to re engage the door stops.

Instead of a zip tie, if you want to pull out the door stop use the T40 Torx bit(it is the longer one) from your Jeep ratchet. Stick it through the loop on the end of the door stop and into the bolt hole on the door frame and push open the door. It will snap right out.
