Right now diesel is 20 cents a gallon more but I’m getting 10pm more….
It depends on where you live. In vast areas of the country. The price is nowhere near that close.

At this moment on 3/19/22, gasoline is $4.25 per gallon, diesel is 5.59 at our local station.
The difference is that much or higher in many places.
I get 17 mpg in my gas Rubicon gladiator all around on 35s. I'd have to really try to get 14. But regardless, at 17 mpg, to drive 300 miles costs me exactly $75.

Diesel is 5.59 per gallon here, at a rated 24 mpg combined. So 300 miles would cost me 69.50.

That's not enough to matter. Buy it for the torque not the fuel economy. You'll never break even, at least in this part of the country.

So you had 3 jeeps with the same engine and all needed serious work before 40,000 miles yet you continued to buy them ? And yet still, thousands of others with the same engine have several hundred thousand trouble miles.

Your obviously a serious gearhead type person who runs his vehicles to their limits. And more power to you. Have fun.

But to say with vitriol that the 3.6 is as bad as you are describing is a bit overstated.

I have one. I have none of the needs that you do. I don't and never will drive like you do or where you do it. And most people never will. And it suits me fine.

Do I know what I'm missing ? Nope. Do I care ? Nope. Do most people care ? Nope.

You do. And a small percentage of other serious hi performance minded folks. And you obviously have the knowledge and history to tell the difference.

For the rest of us who are happy because we just don't care that much about cars, we're just fine. No complaints.
I continued to buy them and was hoping they addressed the issues that came out on 2012 with the followers and cylinder heads. Unfortunately Chrysler cannot seem to fix the issues. Hence why I swapped for a different engine.

Chrysler needs to redesign the cams and rockers for this engine. Or drop it completely and replace with the 2.0l.

the misfire issues, rough idle, ticking followers/lifters need to be addressed.

More of a thread where experienced owners state what issues the engines have and why people should consider avoiding them. Ya know like the video said.

Yet there are jeeps as far as the eye can see in every direction with this engine and the vast majority are reliable and the owners would have no concerns about any the issues you are mentioning.

Many may idle rougher than you would like and those owners will never notice. Etc etc etc.

And yes, some have issues. But not the majority as you seem to suggest.

Again, you have the expectations of a high performance minded person.

Chrysler/stelantis doesn't need to do anything.

You aren't the customer they are trying to please. Otherwise they would have.

Seriously. No need to hate on either engine. Diesel is nice. I like it. But I'm just not paying for it. If you're willing to, more power (or torque :giggle: ) to you.

I don't know anyone who thinks it's the majority. With this said, just as with the IMS issues with early 2000's Porsches, if there is an issue, there is an issue....

Said owners, like yourself, are in the tiny minority.
And with the gas mileage you said you got - how were you driving the gasser? I get a whole lot better mpg, and I can tow 5,000 pounds and get nearly 14.

I’ve owned a few different LS powered vehicles and have swapped them into muscle cars trucks etc. realistically the pentastar requires the rpm to get the cams switched over to the high rpm position. You can feel and hear when the phasers kick over. Part of the issue with the motor is the crappy throttle response coupled with no off idle torque or power. It was ok in my 6 speed manual 2 door jk wrangler but the gladiator weighing at 4650 was just underpowered. They have yet to resolve the issues with the rockers/roller followers failing since 2012. That’s absurd. Then adding egr to the motor which kills idle quality. It’s silly.

short of bumping up displacement adding variable intake runner length or adding two cylinders….the pentastar continues to fall short.

the diesel is absurdly complicated but the power and fuel economy is on another level. 0-60 is slightly quicker but man 60-100 is ridiculously faster. Plus you get a 100k Powertrain warranty.
I’m not sure why they even offer the 3.6 at this point…

The higher RPM is only about 2800 rpm, is it not? The high rpm needs aren't for that. It's typical of almost any modern engine. Spend a weekend at the drag strip and watch the cars from the last 20 years run.

We have multiple hills that have elevation climbs from seal level to 3k and 3k to 5k pretty regularly. The pentastar to maintain flow of traffic speeds 75-80 out here up hill is floored wide open the entire climb. The diesel is not a high peformance engine it’s just not underpowered and is able to do the same climb in 8th gear at 2/3 throttle easily and get drastically better mpg.

I feel like there would not be a recall for ecu misfire conditions and earlier recalls for heads and valve train issues if this was a good motor. There’s also an entire thread on rough idle issues if there wasn’t a problem. Failures are failures. We will never get an honest answer from stellanis but the complaints are widespread throughout multiple vehicle models and years.

Yes if you baby an engine it will last longer than if you use it to it’s full potential. if you drive like a grandma do 60mph on flat ground and don’t ever give it the beans….how will you know if there is a high rpm misfire issue?

Mine is a manual, and I live in the hills. Consequently, I have to rev the crap out of it all of the time. No elevation here though, just hills. The Appalachians don't get too high in elevation. My wife's is a 2016. Same thing, 79000 miles, gets revved often. Elevation could perhaps play a role. Not doubting your experience. Just saying for me, the 3.6 is the engine that is the most economical for me to run. The 3.0 is a sweet motor. But I just cannot justify the added cost, and I don't mind that the 3.6 needs a good rev.

Also, no engine recalls on either Jeep for us, so I guess we've been blessed or lucky there. I think statistically, something like 91% of JTs are powered by the 3.6, so naturally problems will be amplified. Especially on a forum, where people come to post problems.

The diesel performance in a climb and way above sea level is more about the turbo than the fact that it is a diesel. The 4 cyl turbo as well.

Stick a turbo on the 3.6 and you would be amazed.

The pentastar is normally aspirated and that is the nature of the beast.

You didn't mention early on that this was a uphill in the mountains thing.

If so, I'd imagine it would be quite lethargic. I live in boring old Indiana and don't have these concerns.

I am on my 5th vehicle with a Pentastar engine. Having own all three generations of it, I find it to be a decent engine, but not one I would put on a pedestal as being bullet proof. Nor would I let my Jimmies get ruffled if a Youtuber has a negative opinion on it.
