Long story short, my road (a quarter to 1/3 mile hill) was covered in a solid sheet of ice yesterday, top to bottom and side to side. Coming up the hill on the way home from the office, I see the mailman sliding down the hill backwards in the mail truck. He tried to cut the wheels to turn into my driveway that was clear and dry pavement. Well mail truck slid even more instead and he almost ended up in the foot and a half deep concrete culvert ditch next to the driveway. Was then completely stuck. He was sideways and blocking the road. SO I park and run to the house to see what I could find to help. Wife and I own and run a commercial cleaning company so I pulled a box of 20" black floor stripping pads for the buffer. Laid a couple in front of each rear tire and out he came. Moved them to behind the tires and he was able to back into my driveway and get turned to go back down the hill. Not sure how the pads would work in mud or sand, but they worked perfectly on ice. A box of 5 pads can be had for $25 or so and they are light weight and dont take up much room. I already threw a few behind the back seat of my JT, a few in my son's little Bronco Sport, and a few in the wifes Camry. Again, not sure if they would work in all situations, but in my experience of using them once, I was impressed and will have them on hand and try again if needed.

I used my rubber door mat from my house to rescue a stranded pizza delivery civic that had slid into a curb and was stuck. :)

Pulled up to help in the jeep with winch etc. Got out threw the mat under his tires and he drove off the curb.

Some on Amazon. Can usually find them at Home Depot or Lowes as well. Because I buy so many, I have an account with a janitorial supply company and buy a lot in bulk for cheaper. But $22 for 5 is not bad.

Thanks for the tip, I bought a box of these. I added string loop thinking that if you attached them with a string somewhere, you could drive a short distance after getting unstuck before you would need to stop to pick them up.
