So my Gladiator is a Rubicon with the AC outlet in the truck bed. Could you use it to decorate the truck with Christmas lights? My wife thinks we need to do this. Has anyone done this, any tips to keep from causing problems when driving it?

thanks in advance

Sounds like an awesome idea. I’m watching but I don’t have the outlet. I think there are a lot of LED battery operated lights out there too

I did it with my AMX - I should have known better. It's not legal on the road.
As the highway patrolman explain it to me as he was writing a hefty ticket -
You cannot display red lights on the side of the front, or visible from the front.
You can't display white or yellow on the side of the rear or visible from the rear - and other such stuff.
That's because it negates the position marker lights (what people today simply call "marker lights) and red to the front is a definite no-no.
You can have them as long as they are not on while on the highway.

I would be worried about them scratching the paint job.
That, too.

I had mine installed inside in my AMX, plugged them into the lighter. I rewired standard lights to run on 12 volts.

Now you can decorate the tree and stand it in the bed, plugged into the outlet!!

My wife would like that set up. So, around town, I could possibly have lights on the roof or the diamond back tonneau?

I am worried about scratching the paint too... so I like the roof idea... on the tonneau

Got a remote-controlled, multi-color rope light I'm going to plug into my bed outlet. I'll hang the rope light from my rack

Blue is a no-no in those areas also, or at least in NC. You can have clear or orange and yellow colored lights on the front and rear and on the top of the vehicle here without it being illegal, nothing on the sides unless it's above the windshield or side windows. Most people decorate a basket on top they are using for a spare tire or put a wreath with lights on the front or rear.

That being said, for the most part around here, as long as they aren't blinking or flashing while your driving, you can pretty much get away with it in NC and them be any color. Most police officers around here are pretty chill about it, unless it's causing a distraction like flashing or beating with the sound of your music. I am in no way saying any color is legal though, only white, yellow or orange positioned in the spots I said. That's what the highway patrol guys told me and those are the only ones I worry about.

Yup - 100%

Around here blue is volunteer fire and first responders. You see blue, you pull over and let them by.

Anywho, well said.

This is what I did. Passed a small extension out the back window. Also have a few sets running off batteries.
