Mine is a little loose feeling too, not necessarily with a clunk. "It's a Jeep thing".

That would drive me freaking crazy. If it happens in tune with moving the vehicle and could not be duplicated on a lift I would guess at front drivetrain pieces. I wonder what would happen if you put it in 4wd?

Sounds from under the vehicle can be mysterious and hard to isolate, so don’t stick to the rear.

After installing my skid plates I had an annoying rattle that I could swear came from the rear axle area. Ended up being the exhaust touching the oil pan skid.
Thanks Fearless.... I'm new to the Forum but it seems the best place for info and feedback. Far better than the dealership.

Unfortunately when you go to dealerships you find 10 part replacers for every problem solver. Not that different from any other industry, but that’s a different convo!

We could all probably guess at 100 things that could cause that problem, so do you best to be scientific about it and narrow it down.

Isolate the more conditions (like you’ve already been doing): flat vs bumpy ground, 4wd vs 2wd, turning vs straight, reverse vs forward, rolling with car off, etc.

If you can find a safe way to do it, use something to isolate your hearing to a certain area (paper towel roll), and search for the sound.

If you narrow things down more, the armchair mechanics on this forum will give you better guesses :)

So I see alot of people going and guessing things like driveshafts and gears. If working in the Dealer environment has taught me anything, It's that it's always something stupid. Especially when you have less then about 50k miles. Very VERY uncommon for parts to fail by wear within the first 3 years, almost always a defect, or a build error.

I'd lean more towards something loose/dangling that didn't have a clip fully seated and bangs against something.

Shame on me.... I never updated this. I knew the knocking sound wasn't normal... not a "jeep thing". Took it to another dealership, some 45 miles away. The service advisor and a couple of the techs are jeep folks.... sigh of relief.

They called me later that same evening.... Said a blind chimpanzee could've figured this one out. As soon as the plug was pulled on the rear diff, the metal shavings began to flow out.

After a full inspection of the rear differential, a complete new axle was put in. Warranty.

Just like a doctor visit.... sometimes you need a second opinion. What one says is normal could be a tumor!!
