I ordered one of the Mopar style aluminum bumpers from Amazon to replace the plastic bumper on my Rubicon so I can mount a winch. The bumper doesn’t appear to come with the crash cans that are in the Mopar steel bumper. Has anyone pulled the cans from the plastic bumper and reused them in a Mopar clone?

I considered just buying the MOPAR winch mount kit that comes with the longer crash cans, but when I watched some youtube videos, it appears that they are just extensions that have to be screwed onto the original cans, so in addition to the expense, that puts me back to step one with sourcing regular length cans that I can install.

My whole end-goal with this was to have a lightweight, inexpensive winch setup that will still protect my frame until I can install my lift (with heavy springs) and a AEV steel bumper. So I really don’t want to spend a lot on making this work. Worst comes to worst, I will just run the aluminum bumper and included winch mount until I can upgrade to the AEV.

They are welded on the front of your frame horns. They stay on when you remove your bumper, so they are not part of the Jeep not bumper. I cut mine off when modifying my bumper.

I do not believe that is correct. I have watched about twenty bumper install videos from garage grade to professional tutorials. The cans on the plastic bumper look like they may be welded to the metal under-structure of the bumper, but once the bumper is removed, the cans come with it. The crash cans are part of the bumper assemble, not the frame horns.

Here is a photo showing the plastic bumper removed:

When I swapped bumpers i took the plastic bumper apart and cut the crush cans out and reused them, no pics as this was some time ago. There are a LOT of screws that hold the plastic bumper together.

That is probably the route I am going to take, since I have to take the bumper apart to reuse the lights and wiring harness. At least there wouldn’t be any hurry to source the extensions. It looks like they can install with the bumper mounted.

Not really, they are sandwiched between the hook and the frame horns.

I was referring to the extensions. It appears that they screw to the front face of the regular cans. So you just pop off the “short” covers, drill, screw on the extensions, then pop on the “tall” covers.

This will probably just be academic. If I can’t find the extensions and covers for cheap, I will just roll with what I have until the AEV upgrade.
