Custom bumper and gas mileage

I have a nice Warn M8000 I’d like to mount up. My question is in regards to bumpers that expose the front of the tires. It seems to me that this would absolutely kill gas mileage. I’d like to hear other’s experiences with this. Did the mpg drop and how much?

Why buy a Gladiator if your so worried about MPG? You are talking about a extremely small change that would only perhaps make MPG go up by a very small fraction.

It's true, it does hurt gas mileage some. I had trimmed the section off of mine before I added the rugged ridge HD full width to mine. I was getting around 18.1 with it like that on 315 70 17's. With the stock bumper and the section trimmed I was averaging 18.1 mpgs. After adding the rugged ridge front bumper which filled in the gap I went up to 19.1. Right now running winter gas I'm at 18.4 mpgs. Never got it above 18.1 with the stock bumper on, which was probably 4,000 miles of driving.

Yes my fuel mileage dropped when I changed bumpers on my Overland. I think what happens is taking off the shield under the bumper which I believe adds some aerodynamic’s is the culprit. I went from getting a solid 18 down to 14-15 mpg.

Good info, thanks! I also think the air deflector under the bumper is important for mileage. To answer Troybuilt, I certainly didn’t buy a Gladiator for the economy factor. But the mpg is still imputing me. I’m not looking to throw it away. So if one style of bumper works better than another that is the direction I’ll be heading.

I'm averaging 17.2mpg in my first full tank with stock JTSS bumper with those chrome rings on the fog lights over mostly city some highway, not very aggressive driving. This car is pretty comfortable and I'm loving just cruising it.

MPG after market bumper / winch well I'll throw in the ring what I have seen with mine.... Really no change in MPG due to bumper and winch added. Normal I was averaging 23.7+ MPG except after getting a dealership oil change then it drops for a few fill ups to 20-21 MPG. Now the surprise I got with 3rd oil change my MPG dropped off to 20 for next 1850 miles.

I bought a diesel for the mileage, still changed out to a steel bumper and winch.. It actually handles better with the added weight.. 2nd tank of diesel 22mpg, fill up again today 3rd tank! mileage is getting better, manual states that lower mileage is normal in the breakin period
