First dealer I went to wanted 500 but they weren't giving any deals. I paid 1000 to the dealer down the road.

Let me clarify for you. I filled out a credit app to be held on file until financing would be involved (Keys in hand)
COULD be a difference - paid cash, no financing.

Or a lot down... But really, every dealer is going to be different, right?
You bet. Some will deal, some won't, some want huge down, others don't. It's up to them, their management, their business practices, like any other business. In this, there is no rule.

I’m dealing with 3 dealerships right now. One wants $500 deposit one wants $1000 and the last wants $5000 when I place my order.

$5000 seems out of line. I guess it doesn’t matter as I have no plans of backing out. Anyone else pay that high of deposit?
I found those exact same deposits on 3 "local" dealers. When I told the $5000 dealership about the other places, they said it was policy and wouldn't budge. I said too bad. Another dealership texted "Not Interested!" when I said their deposit was too high and said others had $500-$1000 deposits.

Must be a dealership thing. I've ordered my last 3 Jeeps at 2 different dealerships. No deposit, no credit check for any of them.

I checked with 4-5 dealers. Most wanted a $500 deposit, but one made a big deal about wanting a $1000 deposit since it was a manual transmission and he claimed it’d be a hard sell.

The issue with dealers is if they do a sold order, and the person placing it doesn't pick it up they are put on a naughty list by FCA. It is because FCA had an issue with dealers placing fake orders in order to get inventory in the past. Maybe the 5 llarge guy had been burned too many times. Still seems dumb.

For me they wanted $500, no credit check or anything

$5,000 is nuts! I've ordered way more expensive/rare vehicles with deposits between $500-$2k all of them being refundable. My brother was required to leave a large deposit and sign a contract that he wasn’t backing out when he ordered a Porsche Boxster Spyder without AC (Track Car). It’s a freaking jeep after all……not even a SRT.

Just put my order in tonight with a 1000 deposit. Its going toward the cost of the vehicle anyway, so no big concern as I see it. What does worry me, after settling on a price, I only signed a receipt for the deposit and they had me sign a "configuration preview" sheet with all the options I wanted. Nothing was locked in though, in fact on the bottom of this sheet it says "this is not an invoice, prices and equipment shown are tentative and subject to change without prior notice. Orders are accepted only when vehicle is shipped by factory." Even though I was told the price we agreed upon was "locked", I have no assurances of that though. Is this standard policy or am I being had? I know I haven't went through the hard sell yet with the finance person where all the extras are pushed, extended warranties and such. That usually happens when the final sales contract is done. I can survive that, I am a cantankerous old sort and know how to stick to my guns. Just wondering about this process. I ordered a Ford F250 many moons ago and it was nothing like this. I had a signed sales contract when I walked out of there and waited a couple of months for the delivery. Those who have ordered their Gladiators through FCA, did you have signed contracts on the day your ordered?

I got a copy of the build sheet from the dealer to verify order was accurate, with the MSRP and Invoice pricing listed with my total $ including shipping. I then received, signed and returned to the dealer a copy of the Bill of Sale reflecting the agreed upon price based on the build sheet. Only add-ons at the dealer were TTL. (Doc fee was disclosed up front and on the BofS). I was asked at signing if I wanted extended warranty and declined. No pressure or hidden costs at Tri-City in Eden, NC.

"We need a $5,000 deposit."

Translation: "We really don't want to order anything, but FCA says we have to, so there you go."
