The diesel has the two speed fan that is supposed to put more air thru the radiator. My question is when does this kick in. Does it only kick in when the engine gets hot and goes into a safe mode or does it kick in before to keep temps down. I was told it’s very loud and you would notice it.

Yesterday I got into my truck and the fan came on high speed. Coolant temp was in the 190 range because I had only driven a mile or two. I have no idea why it was on high, but it sounded like a helicopter! You WILL notice it.

The noise doesn't bother me. I'd rather have a cool and safe engine.

Point being it's not a hard rule based on temperature. There's more to it than that apparently. It must be programmed with a list of thresholds that have to be met to keep it off. Even though the coolant wasn't even to operating temperature yet, there was something that the ECU didn't like so it kicked over to high speed fan.

How about any who have gone into the safe mode does your fan always go into high? Personally I have not been able to tow yet because my boat is in production but if ever faced with high temps I sure hope the fan goes into high speed before temps rise. I may never need it because I will stay way below tow/weight limit but my boat will have wind resistance also.

I’m a Diesel engine fan…

I haven’t heard my hi speed fan kick in but if it’s anything like my wife’s 2.0 JL fan, that’s LOUD.
