Shouldn't have loose steering or wandering. Tire pressure high?
Loose steering and wandering is how I would describe it when compared to my low, tight, Subaru I just moved from, so maybe not in a way that might be classified as a legitimate issue. However, the tire pressure was very high from the dealer. It got better when I filled them back up to a lower point after my first trail run in it.

I've a Sport S with the diesel option and I look at it as a "performance option" with the luxury of great fuel mileage. You can also think of it as a blank canvas and draw what you want. It drives very good, now the diesels have extra weight up front that will be notable vs the 3.6. The Rubicon will have better shocks that could be beneficial in both diesel or gas engines, these can be added to the Sport or anything else. Up ta you Holmes, the Rubicon badging might help ya in resale value if your long term plans don't include keeping the JT. Good luck with your final decision.

So for me I had to decide between a Rubicon V6 and a Willys diesel. Went back and forth a bit but went with the Willys diesel. I’ve only ever had Rubicons in the past but the reality is I just don’t wheel as much as I used to, maybe once a month (wish it was more). I can admit that Rubicon has a certain amount of badge envy for me, but honestly I barely ever needed the lockers that often in the past. The electronic disconnect and low ratio were nice but again, certainly not something I can take full advantage of anymore. The diesel is something that I enjoy every single day. That torque off the line makes me smiles every time, the diesel gurgling when idling, etc. And knocking down 24 mpg combined is making a noticeable difference in my wallet. The Willys also has the limited slip rear differential which goes a long way off road. The diesel is just fun as hell for me and not regretting my choice. Go with the Sport Diesel and build it up to whatever your off road needs are. ?
Very similar use case down to previous 3.6 Rubi (albeit a JKU). Willy’s diesel now and loving it more each day. Had to part with the M/Ts, not great on ice and a bit noisy for my tastes but man these trucks are great.

If you compare it financially, the Sport diesel is the bargain. Normally, the Rubicon package gets you better gearing, lockers, wider axles, slightly different suspension and fender flares, quick disconnects, and a 4:1 transfer case for about $7k.

When you get a diesel, getting the Rubicon still costs $7k more, but the gearing is the same for Sport and Rubicon. The diesel will partially negate the transfer case. That leaves $7k for wider axles, suspension and fender flares, and sway bar auto disconnects. How much are air lockers (combined with a regear and OBA) and manual sway bar disconnects. Different wheels will even provide a wider stance like the Rubi axles provide. For about the same price, you could get the Sport with 37s, 4.88 gears, and OBA. You don't even need to repaint the red dash.

Question was drivability, oil burner Sport vs Rubicon. Man that is a hard one. I also looked at drivability and have a Mojave now. Sorry no help here, but I'd probably do the oil burner Sport between the two, but wouldn't trade my Mojave as far as drivability is concerned.
