What is the purpose of the set screw?
When the cover is RTV'd in place and you want to take it back off, it acts as a release mechanism to break the RTV bond. Having serviced mine already, it works.

Did your cover fit flat? Sounds like his "rocks" a bit when put on the housing.
Quite honestly, I have never check it for true flatness on the mating surface. The OP has mention to me in private message about 1/32" wobble and I told him I did not think that would be an issue once set up and torqued to spec with the RTV.

I did not mention it nor took a pic, but when I serviced my rear diff fluid last week and took the cover off, I noticed the inside shelf lip of the mating surface is a bit closer towards the mount screw holes that the factory cover and I think that is also contributing to maybe less support area when using the factory gasket.

Like I mentioned, once I did RTV like Teraflex calls for in their instructions, all the leaking went away.

I think a quality RTV properly applied should handle 1/32 without problem.
As long as both surfaces are oil/grease free, clean and dry I've used it for the valley end seals under V8 intakes.

I recently changed diff oil and used a couple appropriately sized drill bits as guides. Worked great.

@Hootbro, do you remember your front axle locker protruding into view port? Granted, I was half asleep, but I again thought I was going to have to take it off and go back with stock. I managed to get the view port plug tightened up with no apparent contact. Then I spent an hour and a half looking for the lower plug. Thought I accidentally threw it away…project from hell.

Interesting how I can install a lift on a ‘89 CJ with 1 arm…other was in a sling strapped to my chest…with no issues, but something as simple as simple as a diff service…LMAO

Yeah, the locker is close in the top viewport but the inspection cover will fit. When I did my rear diff service last week and took the inspection cover off, there was nothing to indicated it made contact on the inside.

That’s a nice cover. I like the large fill port/inspection hole.

Yeah, you aren't filling and trying to see how full it is through the same small hole, too often over-filling or at least making a mess - put some in, check, put more in, check again.........
Definitely a nice cover.

I'll say this, on the front cover, it's not much of an inspection port. The electronics box for the locker on Rubicon's protrudes into the port. It is how ever nice sticking one of the new flexible bags up there to fill through it. The best I can tell, the fluid volume seems about the same.

The down side to the bags...is that they're more fragile that they seem...
