Looking for ideas for mounting the spare on the rear bumper.... I don't want to give up bed space and I don't want to drag it over rocks when stored underneath

hold onto your wallet Todd, they are not cheap. expeditiononestore.com offers one for $2460. it will accommodate up to 40". alliedexpedition.com offers one for $3468 but it doesn't center the tire. and then of course is the expense of the 5th rim and tire.

How about, on the 4 or 5 obstacles you encounter in a lifetime that might drag the tire, you put the tire in the bed for a minute or two. Send me $1500 and this idea can be yours
We overland and crawl, socal to moab and hopefully the arctic soon..
living in the mojave desert as we do, scraping the hitch is normal, so it's a bit more than 4 or 5 times in a lifetime....
I don't keep my fire extinguisher in the shed just because I've never used it in the house, safe is better than sorry

I'll be interested to see what you come up with. We do a lot of snow wheeling here in the PNW, and I share your concern with the under-mounted spare. Case in point, two weekends ago my buddy broke through the crust and found the creek bed below, and in the process lost both beads on the downhill side:

We were fortunate enough to have several spares between us so we did what we had to do in order get him recovered and up on flat ground, without much regard to his wounded tires/wheels, but had we needed to access a spare tire mounted below the rear bumper... miserable...

I found a site recently that sells components to do diy weld up swingarm bumpers. I’ll see if I can find it again. I’m somewhat on the same page, in that I want to setup a swingarm for rotopax and other smaller items I’d like to relocate. But my setup requires that no changes be made to factory towing. I also have no interest in spending 2-3k on a built one.

Edit: Found it. Anyone have experience with their parts?

You can also use a spare as an anchor point (buried in ground) for the winch to pull on, but not if the back is buried and the tire is underneath.....

So no rear tire carrier for me but I will have bikes similar to a Sprinter or Owl van set up. I have a VKS Fab rear bumper and a TMR customs mega swing arm bearing setup.
