Just received my first registration renewal and notice that there is a weight fee on there. Is this normal? Does everyone with a Gladiator have that?

I was not asked what towing weight I wanted to pay for when I registered my JT, but I was when I registered my Ridgeline.

I was never asked how much I wanted to tow when I registered it at DMV. They asked me to get a weight certificate from weighting station which I did. However, I didnt know that I would be charged a weight fee going forward at each registration renewal.

That is strange. I would think the system would have the truck weight in it since it should be standard. Or that you could whip out the owners manual. What happens when you add bumpers, winch, etc? Go back every year with the current weight?

Just to clarify, the weight certificate was the requirement when I initially purchased the vehicle and wanted to register it in CA (it was bought new out of state).

Yup - all pickup trucks in California are registered as commercial vehicles.

Does that mean that they all have the "weight Fee" tacked on during registration renewal?

If the vehicle was bought new in California then the weight fee was added when it was first registered, using the unladen weight supplied by the manufacturer. If bought out of state, then the owner needs to get a certified weight to give to the DMV. It won't change once the initial California registration is issued and many people don't even know it's there. Here's the current fee schedule from the Vehicle Code:

Motor Vehicles With No More Than Two Axles

Unladen Weight in PoundsCodeFee
0 – 1,999A$8
2,000 – 2,999B$8
3,000 – 4,000C$24
4,001 – 5,000D$80
5,001 – 6,000E$154
6,001 – 7,000F$204
7,001 – 8,000G$257
8,001 – 9,000H$308
9,001 – 10,000J$360

Thanks! very helpful. Mine is $154 which aligns with the fee schedule. This is my first truck so I wasnt sure about the different fees.

Delaware does something similar. All trucks are registered as "commercial" and give a commercial "C" prefix license plate number. Weight plays into a larger registration fee but is all rolled into one fee and not line item out separate.

Are you referring to total registration fee?
Correct, I’m kind of making sure I am correct in disliking the state of California before I rant. 🤣

FWIW, Nevada did charge me just short of $800 last month.

I wish I could help you there but it's very close to what you are paying in NV. Total for renewal is $813.

That’s not too bad for a new vehicle. However, considering the higher property tax and state income tax… still ouch.
