I’ve been dealing with this fluttering sound for over 4,000 miles and it’s really aggravating. I’m not sure if I have something internal going on or if it’s an exhaust leak somewhere. Truck idles fine, no performance issues. Started out as a fluttering sound around 3k rpm’s . Went away for a few weeks when I started running 93octane. It’s now back and starts in the lower rpm’s now. Noise is present with rpm’s increasing and decreasing. Can you tell from my videos if my engine sounds like it has the jeep tick?

I can’t tell anything from your audio, other than the wind was blowing.

You said you are running 93 octane. Have you chipped or re-programed the engine to require it? If not, using it may not be helping.

That is my thought as well not sure why you are using high octane.

Sorry for the wind. I’m using high octane because I couldn’t tell if I had an exhaust leak or I was getting pinging. In the manual it states that you may experience pinging on 87octane

Probably not pinging as that would only happen under load, hard acceleration, pulling a heavy boat up a ramp etc. Engine noises can be aggravating, one of our previous cars had an engine that sounded like a diesel. Everybody who heard basically said “yup it makes noise” and couldn’t identify the source. Car ran like that for three years without an incident and when we traded it, the dealer didn’t say a word. Tell your dealer at the next service and get it on the record and enjoy the truck.

sounds normal. That little noise you hear may be the fuel rail. If or when the valve train starts ticking you will hear it plainly in the cab. My wrangler started ticking just on start up. then got worse and worse.

Sounds like a normal Jeep drive train to me.

Note: I use Chevron 89 octane in my Gladiator exclusively for the last 44K miles. I have never heard a rattle or ping - no matter how big the load.

Pinging is detonation. Like said earlier, it's a low RPM, heavy load situation. It doesn't happen at idle or mild acceleration, etc. and it doesn't happen at higher RPM because detonation takes time.
It is also a rattling type sound, not a tick tick tick sound.

What would cause it to sound like this when pressing the gas? It just doesn’t sound right

I’m pretty sure I have either a lifter issue or manifold leak. Truck sounds terrible when I rev

If I don't run mid-grade, I get pinging. I know "it happens only with a load" but I can prove to you that mine happens at idle, and on load (don't notice it cruising) when using low grade fuel. It goes away completely when I use 89+.

A couple months ago I needed gas, and the station was out of all but premium. That tank took me almost back up to my pre-lift mileage! I got 18MPG out of that premium tank.

That’s what I thought was happening with mine so I started running 93 octane noise went away for 2 weeks now it’s back . It’s very annoying and happens in lower rpm’s. Before only happens around 3k rpms. I think I have a lifter or leak. It’s like a flutter sound. I also notice I get way better mpg with the premium as well

“So is Higher Octane Fuel More Efficient?

In a word, no. On its own paying for premium gasoline does not make your car run better or get greater gas mileage. Giving your car the fuel it requires to run smoothly and efficiently, without damage to the engine, does make a difference in your fuel mileage.”
