Ok.

So I was in another thread about the brakes (if you really care check post history) and that got me thinking about driving styles.

Thought this could make interesting discussion.

So I think of myself as a proactive driver....

I imagine most drivers feel that way so let me explain how I'm better than you ? (jk though I do think my style superior to yours... possibly... discuss below)

So by proactive... I mean

I am multiple car lengths behind a car in front of me on the road. I don't want to be anywhere near you.... nothing personal but the majority of people like to ride ass....

Stupid, dangerous, can't see anything, what is the point? I have an open mind... explain to me how riding someones ass is a plus benefit.

I mean...

I anticipate stops...

I watch as everyone around me accelerates towards a red light. Ok. It is a half mile away.... i get it... except...

It is a half mile away.

It is already red. I get passed because people want to accelerate until they get to the absolute point they have to stop... then they hit their brakes. Why not slowndown more naturally..

I have an open mind. Please explain to me how this makes any sense.

I could go on but I want to hear from you. Why does everyone else suck so bad and how can they do better?

Everyone thinks they are the best driver out there. For all your logic, that person going around has logic of their own.

I drive fast, most of the time. I accelerate rapidly. At least in the FiST and GT4. The Gladiator doesn't really do rapid. I like to be at the front. With traffic behind me. But I don't hold people up. I don't stay in the left lane.

I drive intelligently. Large gaps. Watch the flow. Allow people time to move over, though most don't.

For your specific question on braking or slowing for a light. I hear you. Understand your logic. I would pass you. Because I believe you're just going to be in my way when the light goes green.

The reality is most people get driver training by their parents and their parents aren't great drivers. Combined with the selfish nature of people and you get terrible drivers.

I don't like to ride somebody's ass because I like to have options should I need to move out from behind the person I'm behind right then. I like to be able to see their rear tires - if I can't see those, then I'm too close and I'll re-adjust as the traffic moves. I don't much care what the person behind me is doing, he can ride my tailgate as much as he wants.

Being in a 4x4 may give me options I never had before. LIke, if there were highway traffic and there was a way off but it wasn't exactly an exit.....I can't say that I wouldn't take that option if I really needed to.

I think with the excessively high MPG claims people have on here... they likely drive like my grandma.

edit: also following too close on the highway is the best way to have to replace your windshield. I’m like you, I stay far back... no issues so far.

Goofy thing is that people behind me believe that because I come up to the light slowly that I'm going to be in their way and hold them back when it turns green. Sorry, not the case.
In fact, quite a few will pull over into the other lane (which across the intersection DISAPPEARS) and believe I'll be behind them. Imagine their shock when they are behind me, or try hard to get around me and fail.
Just because I see a light that's turned red and see no reason to hurry up to it doesn't mean I'm going to be granny when it turns green.
I mean this happens a LOT. Imagine their surprise.
It's especially hilarious when I'm in my 73 with the carbs sticking through the hood - I don't always zip up to a light and smack the brakes. I may coast to that light, but when it's green, it may as well be the tree at the track. Dope in the minivan over there thinks I'm a poky driver?
I leave space and it pissed me off when an idiot pulls in and I can't even see their rear bumper - they pull in when their rear bumper is maybe 6" ahead of my front bumper. Got news for them - if there's an accident they are actually at fault for that idiotic move.

HAHAHA - that's laughable. Ask my wife. Happens that your sport isn't geared or have tired geared for MPG. You don't have to granny-drive some of these to get good MPG. Just ask my wife about my driving - she'll fill you in and give you an ear-full.

I was in the left of 3 lanes of traffic moving 55 on I235 in Des Moines. A vehicle in the far right lane kicked up or threw a rock that bounced across all lanes and hit a windshield on a past vehicle square in the middle.
So yes, staying back CAN matter, but traffic 2 lanes away, or on a 2 lane, going the other way, can still toss a rock and bust your windshield. In each case of broken windshields on any of my vehicles, it never came from a vehicle close in front of me. I try to allow the "1 car for every 10" when idiots don't squeeze in, but it still happens.
You've been lucky.
Even my wife has had a chipped and cracked windshield and she stays way back and is a conservative driver. In her case, a vehicle in the other lane on a 2 lane kicked up a rock that crossed in front of her.
They do not always go straight like a bullet.

great points about rocks, and now that I think about it I never stay behind or diagonal to a large truck... I step back a little or zoom around them ;)

but you have a fairly stock overland.... Mojave’s/rubis with lifts and tires getting over 20 is what gets me

I like to drive too fast. But sometimes too slow. I like to not pay attention and cut others off. Sometimes I tailgate cause like, it's fine who cares.

Other times I turn left in front of people but don't use my turn signal. I find others react well to that.

I like to merge onto the highway without easing into the flow and just sort of force myself into a spot I don't really fit in so others have to mash their brakes.

If someone does any of these things to me I honk and flip them off and scream HEY FUCK YOU BUDDY! Because I'm more important than they are.

I'm a really good driver and probably better than all of you.

I drive my JT slow and lazy.... No slouch off the line, but I got fast cars for fast driving.
I think the JT has mellowed me out a bit. Top off, doors off....stereo on....not much to hurry about.

You are correct, sir. Got a job, got a house, got cool kids who like to cruise and no wife to tell me how to spend my hard earned money. Put on Exile on Main Street and do just that. Go wheeling and listen to the 8 year olds laugh their heads off from the back seat.

Plus when your average tailgater is staring at my diff and KNOWS he will go under my bed...."He who angers you, controls you."

Relax and enjoy life?

Not sure. I watch the car in front and the car in front of that car. I don't tailgate. I go 5 over the speed limit. I use my turn signals, even in a parking lot. No accidents in my 10 short years of driving experience.

I enjoy driving. I like a manual transmission and might row through the gears kinda quick to get up to speed, I just dig it. Other than that I'm very chill. A friend of mine who is absolutely a maniac driver gave me a hard time once. He said "you drive like a old man", my reply was, "I am an old man, and that's because I don't drive like you."
