I can get an original EZ up for about $150 that I can put up myself. Thinking of trying that over an awning that costs 500+. Just occasionally used. Any thoughts on that.

that is what i use. I have a 1st up, 100 dollar walmart special i have been using for years. Fits width wise in the bed so it takes up little space.
I now also have a topper on the back and use the pop up as a sun and rain screen for the topper.

That works, add a wall to block the wind. Mabe not quite a cool as a 270deg awaning but a lot less money and can be used anywhere.

EZ up has a showroom and sales in Norco Ca . I'll just go there. The beauty of So Cal everything is here. A 10x10 with 2 walls should do it. Add a Gazelle tent and I will be set. Add the fridge and the Bluetti and the bed will be full, almost. Tools, food, clothes, kitchen, bedding, emergency stuff, and dog stuff. That little bed fills up fast.

I have vivid memories of my last easy up. I remember it flying thru the sky 50 feet over our heads after being hit by a serious wind gust out on El Mirage dry lakebed. LOL. I've avoided them since, but I'm guessing a 270 awning would have been hopelessly mangled as well.

The rear rock rails on the bed work great as tie down points for the easy up, that what i have been doing.

That would have kept it on the ground. But probably would have torched my paint job.....

It couldn't have been too bad, if you have vivid memories of it.

That is one thing to be aware of - I see a few tents blown about. EZ-Ups require more tie-down effort than a trailer or truck-mounted one.

They are also slightly more weight. In my youth when racing, I would lug around the 10x20 one we had for the racecar.

That said, they are a good option, and you might use it more outside of camping, too.
