So this is going to sound like I lost my mind... But the ESS never works (and no warning light is on) when I drive my Gladiator, every time my wife drives it, the ESS works. She is 100lbs and 5'1" and I am 180lbs and 5'9", but that shouldn't make a difference.
Anyone ever hear of anything like this before? It is driving me crazy

My ESS has never worked if A/C is on, I wonder if that's normal . If the A/C is off, works all the time, is that possibly the difference?

I cannot swear to this, but my understanding is that there has to be a certain amount of brake pressure for a determined time to activate the auto stop. Maybe you are lighter on the brakes when you stop than she is? I know when I forget to turn it off in my Mojave, it rarely auto stops.

That is 100% accurate. A light brake press won't engage it. It needs enough pressure to know you are safely stopped before it will engage ESS.

I will try pressing on the brakes harder and see if that works

Not to hijack this thread but does the ESS work while A/C is running?

I do IT stuff so I can buy Jeep stuff.
Not to hijack this thread but does the ESS work while A/C is running?
ESS won't shut the JT off when the A/C is running - the compressor needs to keep running to keep things cool. Here is a section from the owner's manual:

POSSIBLE REASONS THE ENGINE DOES
NOT AUTOSTOP
Prior to engine shut down, the system will check many
safety and comfort conditions to see if they are fulfilled.
Detailed information about the operation of the Stop/Start
system may be viewed in the instrument cluster display
Stop/Start Screen. In the following situations, the engine
will not stop:
 Driver’s seat belt is not buckled
 Driver’s door is not closed
 Battery temperature is too warm or cold
 Battery charge is low
 The vehicle is on a steep grade
 Cabin heating or cooling is in process and an accept-
able cabin temperature has not been achieved

 HVAC is set to full defrost mode at a high blower speed
 HVAC is set to MAX A/C
 Engine has not reached normal operating temperature
 Engine or exhaust temperature is too high
 The transmission is not in a forward gear
 Hood is open
 Transfer case is in 4L or N (Neutral)
 Brake pedal is not pressed with sufficient pressure
 Accelerator pedal input
 Vehicle speed threshold has not been achieved from
previous Autostop
 Steering angle is beyond threshold
 ACC is on and speed is set
 Vehicle is at high altitude
 System fault is present

Thanks, I must have missed that section. I know my wife's BMW ESS shuts down when A/C is running but it also lessens the air flow rate. Thinking about it the A/C probably shuts down and just runs the fan circulating the cabin air.

ESS will work with the A/C running. Mine does it on occasion, but only after the cab has cooled down. It will kick back on if I've been sitting at a redlight for over 30-45 seconds. I'm pretty sure it only kicks back on because the cab temperature without the compressor running is going up like there is a fire under the truck.

Ess kicks in depending on several things. How hard your pressing the pedal at a stop is a big one. So I’m betting you have the pedal depressed much less when at a stop then what your wife does.
Take it for a spin, when it gets to operating temp come to a stop and have your foot depress the brake decently hard and hold the pedal through the duration of the stop….

My wife flinstone stops so Ess only works when she drives too.
