Hi All,

Trying to organize a trip up to Flagpole via Union Springs on 09/03/2022.

The current plan is to meet at Sheetz in Harrisonburg between 0900 and 1000:
1825 S Main St
Harrisonburg, Virginia

At 10:00 (or once everyone confirmed coming is accounted for) we will head out to the trailhead, and pull off so we arent causing a traffic jam to air down, disconnect swaybars and all that jazz. IIRC there is no good staging area at the bottom of Union Springs like there is on the Switzer Lake (Dunkel Hollow) side.

We will hit the trail, eat lunch at the knob, then depending on how the group is feeling, head out the Switzer Lake way or turn around and hit Union Springs the other direction.

This is definitely a more technical trail than Peters Mill for those of you who just did that trip, but its nothing a stock Gladiator cant do. Might touch a skid or your hitch do to our long wheelbase but nothing crazy at all. Its a lot of fun and is a super popular trail because of it. Definitely worth doing to say you did. Also has much better views than Peters Mill. If you're worried about pinstripes, I haven't been up there in the past couple years so dont know what to tell you. Maybe someone more familiar with the trail will chime in and let us know what to expect in that regard. Always expect the potential for some friendly handshakes with brush either way.

Summary:

  • When?
    • 09/03/2022
    • Meet between 0900 and 1000
  • Where?
    • Sheetz - Harrisonburg
      1825 S Main St
      Harrisonburg, Virginia
    • Flagpole Knob via Union Springs Road
  • Diffuiculty:
    • Easy to Moderate - Rock ledges, and ruts, potential for pinstriping, one creek crossing, but shallow water. Stock JK/JL/JT all more than capable
  • Comms:
    • GMRS Channel 18 - Backup 7
    • (Note theres a repeater in the area on 16 so 18 is to avoid getting stepped on by that)
  • Current List of People Going:

Nice! Thanks for getting it started. I can't make 8/27, but I'll keep watching the thread. If the ride moves into Sept, I should be able to make it

Thank you for the tag, but I'll be in Disney World!

Your channel choice should be fine just remember you can't exceed the limits of your radio, so stay within sight of each other! Would hate to lose contact with the guys using handhelds.

Consider me a tentative yes. I’m hoping to lure someone into coming with me. If I can pull that off, I’m in. Sounds like a great day on the trail.

Hey Guys, looking like its gonna be a tough weekend for a lot to make. Would it be better for anyone if we moved it back a week to the 3rd?

Alright guys, Sept 3 it is. I updated this post title and the original post with the new date.

@GOCAMPN @JTBurns just tagging you both so you see the date changed if that works out better for you.

I'll check back closer to the date, I'm sure I'll get the side-eye for this one haha.

I updated the main post with a tentative list of attendees, etc. A guy I did Bald Mountain with that has a 21' JTR said he'd go as well. Looks like we're shaping up a good group of Gladiators. Really looking forward to this one
