I want to say it was the E30 years.

You have to forgive me. My wife and I were just talking about this. And she reminded me that her friends car was a Maxima! 1986. The BMW 325 was a timing belt job. I am now remembering a bit more clearly. The Maxima was the vacuum manifold from hell.
