I was 'that guy' at one point, too. Louder exhaust doesn't help to know how your engine is working....
You're a special one aren't you? Who said anything about "how your engine is working"? That's called diagnosis.

Sounds like you're now "that guy" that doesn't actually understand what's going on.

Going back to OP's question, starting events are not going to be a massive spike in volume unless you're straight piped. A decent aftermarket exhaust won't be a noisy affair on engine starts. The most noise typically comes when the throttle is the most open.

My wife has NO muffler on her JLU and it's not as loud as one would think. Also her ESS has worked 4 times since we purchased new in 2018, and we're ok with that. Also helps on the trails to hear where the engine is at. Also wanted to note that I'm an ASE Certified mechanic by trade, and listening to the exhaust is a great way to hear what your engine is doing. Just thinking out loud.

Wowoweewah... that escalated quickly...

Thanks for reeling her back in guys... To be honest, I'm considering a moderately louder exhaust - maybe not so much the ATAK, but perhaps the S-Type. Though everyone seems to be saying its not as loud as they expected... probably since it's only V6. In any case, I was primarily concerned about the ESS and if it gets annoying with a louder exhaust. I'm in NYC so ESS is always going on and off... That said, I'm considering an aftermarket exhaust for the same reason probably 90% of us want them - they look cooler, and whether we want to admit it or not, they sound cool too.
Being a city guy, I don't plan/intend to do much "wheeling" beyond some unpaved roads and trails to go car camping, or driving on some local beaches.
(Please don't debate the notion of a Jeep Gladiator that doesn't overland, traverse rock trails, or attack the dunes.)

On a brighter note, thanks to this... ahem... "discourse", I think my thread might make the forum's weekly "Most Popular Discussions" email!

If you want looks, I would go with a stainless steel weld-on tip. Have you looked into those? Amazon sells plenty.

I would not recommend going the 'louder' exhaust route. There are reasons why cars come with the mufflers they do. Everything is computer controlled. You have no performance gains with a muffler delete, just like you have HP loss when you put in a Cold Air Intake.

Is there a reason other than noise you want a new muffler?

If you want a sports car, get a sports car.
"Go get a sports car" is by far the most useless and condescending reply. You aren't helping the OP get an idea of ESS event noise levels. You also aren't spending OP's money for him, so it's rather entitled of you to suggest he give up on purchasing a new exhaust he wants and go buy an entirely different vehicle instead.

He's been pretty transparent about what he's after, why he wants it, and what his concerns are that he's looking to get answers to. He's not doing a "muffler delete". Unfortunately it's clear you don't have much hands-on experience with this sort of thing and are basing your replies off assumptions you've made over the years rather than facts and understanding.

You are free to do what you want with your Jeep. But if you can't help someone else with answers, it's probably best you don't reply.

Your louder exhaust satisfy ______?
If you want looks, I would go with a stainless steel weld-on tip. Have you looked into those? Amazon sells plenty.
No thanks. For one thing, I want the dual/split exhaust. Second of all, if I do swap out my exhaust, I'm going to go full cat-back, not a simple tip-replacement.

I would not recommend going the 'louder' exhaust route. There are reasons why cars come with the mufflers they do. Everything is computer controlled. You have no performance gains with a muffler delete, just like you have HP loss when you put in a Cold Air Intake.
I won't argue with you on the merits and modest/minimal performance gains of a tune cat-back exhaust coupled with a quality cold-air intake. Not like chip-tuning, or adding a turbo/super-chargers, of course. I've been around cars long enough to know what I know, and indulging you in a tit-for-tat argument will be pointless. But thanks for PSA, Karen.

Is there a reason other than noise you want a new muffler?
Yeah, I said it a few times... looks cool, sounds cool... and (this reply will surely bunch up your panties) there's $2000 burning a hole in my pocket. And an aftermarket exhaust, as well as some other mods that will quench the flames.

If you want a sports car, get a sports car.
Not sure what you mean here...
If I want to go fast AND loud, I ride my motorcycles.
That said, I WOULD love a sports car, and maybe one day I'll pick myself up another Mustang GT. Or maybe I'll pick up my dream car since I was a kid - a 964 911 Turbo - when my kids are done with college (will be a while; my youngest is in the 2nd grade).

In reading through your replies to this thread, I suspect that you're just the kind of person that likes to troll threads, and pick arguments. Jeep enthusiasts are probably the most prolific of automotive enthusiasts that like to tune and make their vehicles "their own" - through ALL myriad of tuning - from off-roading, to going faster, to maximizing their experiences when parked...
Hell, Jeep even markets these Wranglers and Gladiators to be modified. I'm sure you are well aware of this. And given this, the only logical explanation I can give for your responses to this thread is that you're simply looking to troll.
There's always going to be those people on forums like this that LOVE to argue and try to convince others that after-market add-ons are pointless, will void your warranty, will shoot your eye out, and so forth. Thank you for identifying yourself. Now... I'm sure there's an HOA meeting you're late for... please take your neighborly suggestions there.

I have an S-Type on my Wrangler. The warmed-up ESS restarts when I forget to push the button are a non-event. It's the early morning cold starts that I'm self conscious about, especially during very early departures from state park camp grounds.

For those folks that have aftermarket exhausts - in particular those with louder exhausts...
Did you guys opt to keep the auto-start/stop feature on?
I can imagine those with ATAK-type exhausts scaring the shit out of children and small dogs each time it restarts at red lights. Or being marginally annoying.
There is NO aftermarket exhaust that will be as quiet, or quieter than stock.. ever.. any aftermarket anything.. just an fyi ; )

Popcorn worthy thread!

To the OP, I use the ESS with my AWE Trail exhaust and its fine. Once the truck is up to normal operating temp the start up isn't crazy. Hope that helps.

Funny how Scat is slang for shit LOL

I personally have the AWE dual exhaust on my Gladiator. It is louder than stock. I spent the money on this exhaust system, because I wanted dual exhaust tips on the sides. I initially thought that the 4” tips were large, but I have gotten used to the size of the exhaust tips. Good luck on whatever exhaust you choose to purchase. It’s your money and your Jeep.
