I’m not a huge car nut yet I am working on my knowledge of vehicles and such and I noticed while looking underneath my jeep a spotted a leak (smells like some type of oil).

This is in the rear of the jeep and I wanna say this is gearbox oil? Could be wrong like I said not the smartest when it comes to this stuff.

If anyone is able just curious about what kinda leak this is as well as what the repair is for this. Is it serious enough for me to take to someone to fix and if so typically how much would this cost?

Looks like possibly a leaking rear pinion seal. That's the part leaking at the driveshaft where it enters the rear differential.
If a person has tools and some skill at small mechanical repairs, it can be easily replaced and repaired.

Another vote for pinion seal leak. I would advise cleaning the underside thoroughly before taking it in for any intended dealer visit for warranty consideration. While it is an off road vehicle, some dealers like to point to that as the cause of such things. Also, while it is dripping now, it will need to be dripping again when looked at to be deemed a action item as they consider "staining" without droplets to be an acceptable leak.

You may also want to check and top off the fluid.

Put your finger in it… and smell it.😂 Does it smell like shit? If yes…yup…it’s gear oil.

What year is the truck? I’d think the drivetrain is warrantied for 5years 60k miles?

Before you take it anywhere…..Clean it!!!!

Looks like that is the issue. Looks like I could do it myself for the most part.

Two things:
Do I need any special tools for this?

Do I need to drain the oil prior to changing the gasket

It is a bit involved for most DIY types.

Edit, I see you are probably out of warranty by time. I would suggest finding a 4x4 shop that does regears or a driveline shop that knows Jeeps.

Did you buy it new? If yes…..when did you take ownership?
I would think, if you purchased It in April 2020 (example), you should still fall under the 5 year 60Kmile drivetrain warranty (It’s only February).

I would definitely look whether you qualify for warranty fis.

As said, that is your pinion seal leaking. You'll want to make sure you get the nut torqued back to the same spec. Several ways to do it but I would seek help from someone who does it a bit. If you were near by we could throw it on the lift and knock it out.

What is the source of these instructions? Not happy with what I currently have.
