Something else isn't right here.. I thought I was tripping about the photo I posted above but now that the sun is out I can see this deformation on the front of the bumper where the winch plate welds on the back. What's your guys' thoughts on this???

Is there a bracket behind the bumper there? If so, it's a heat line from welding the bracket. You will get that alot of times when welding thin sheet metals. They didn't grind that area down.

Years ago, I had a Pro-Zap bumper on my XJ that did the same thing. Any time you have flat steel (skin) with something welded on the opposite side this can happen. Flat metal is much more susceptible to this type of deformation. I feel you would be much less likely to see this on a stock steel bumper. The mounting points are hidden and you have a separate winch plate that effectively "Boxes the front frame horns.

I haven't had this happen to my stock steel bumper, but then again, I haven't had a hard pull yet.

Yes that is right where the winch plate is welded on the back.

so are we thinking nothing to be concerned about?

Yep, nothing to worry about.
the only problem with that is that spot in the metal wasn't there when I installed it, happened after winching out. and the other spot where the winch itself made contact with the bumper, looks like the entire winch plate flexed upwards

Then you got issues. Thought the spot was there the whole time.

Are there any braces on the rear of the winch plate? I have a Pritchett Canyon bumper, and it has corner braces that bolt to the frame to prevent the rear of the tray from flexing upward.
