Know of a senior couple with a brand new Lexus that they absolutely refuse to take the time and learn the infotainment system. They stick a old school Garmin GPS unit to the windshield and use that for navigation that is probably 10+ years out of date on the maps.
I believe it……. My Dad was the same.
God rest his soul - I totally *get it*…. At a certain age, they’re just not able to comprehend the new technology simply due to lack of brain function.
They like to stick with ‘what they know’…..

My Dad was 91 when he passed…. in his mind…. he thought he was still 55.
Always talking about ‘girls’ like he was still dating. ☺
Luckily for us, we conveniently took his driving privileges 5 years earlier.

For work. I use a combination Garmin, goggle maps, and my phone. Try finding a gas compressor station in the middle of Bum Fvck Backwoods. Where the roads become a cow path. I rely on the Garmin more then the others. Goggle maps has had me driving through some farmer's front yard to get to a compressor station more than once.

When I use maps I’ve learned to double check the directions before starting my journey.
More than once the map (Phone or vehicle navigation) has added a few unnecessary turns.

The factory GPS is low value. I like to use my phone with a navigation app (Google Map and Gaia) along with CarPlay to see the map on the big screen.

The factory GPS is low value.
Only up through 2023.
The new one is great - in fact, it's a lot like Google in many ways, and it knows things happening in real time. It's TomTom based. It's too bad you can't do a direct software update to the old head units. The new NAV is really good.

But i wouldn't call the other low value - it depends on your needs. For most folks, it's fine. My wife likes it a lot, it gives major changes on the cluster right in front of your face, no need to look over to the radio, it talks you through it fine. Yes, it's messed up a couple of times - but, I've had more and worse mess-ups with Giggle maps. It's left me in a rail yard in Sioux City, taken me over an hour out of my way on the way to Collinsville (instead of a more direct, but more rural route straight through MO), it's left me scratching my head more than once, so I can't say any of them are perfect.

My 23 Mojave nav works great with regards to GPS. Planning trips, I get GPS coordinates and plug them into Uconnect, verify the location by comparing on my phone using google maps. It was very good for my trip to Utah last summer. my vehicle was made 12/23 maybe I'm lucky.

I tried Android auto, that interface is horrible on the 8.4 screen, Id rather just use my phone.
Uconnect nav is not perfect it has some glitches but overall it gets the job done.
Oh, and I had one of those Senior moments (70) but that was my fault because I did not have the Nav configured correctly, I had the "use unimproved roads" checked on the Uconnect configuration screen and boy, oh boy, that can get you into big trouble.
I also carry I giant US Rand McNally road atlas Large scale, just in case all else fails.

Yeah, the interface on the 8.4 - the layout, is bad. They waste a lot of real estate. I never cared for how it looked so if I used anything on my phone with the 8.4 it was Waze.
Same as you - if I used Google maps for some reason - I used the phone. It was fewer steps, and better interface.

For many it's a preference that seems to translate into "why are you still using.........." in some cases.

Reasons others just won't understand.

I like Waze it's good my son, and wife both use it.
I find Jbv1, a better alternative has many features it's mainly a Valentine one companion app but, it does what Waze does and more as far as alerts are concerned.
It's free, no advertisements has built in data bases for over head surveillance, red light camera, tracker devices.

Now I'm not an advocate of breaking the law, nothing wrong with knowing who's watching you or tracking you, Lord knows we are under constant surveillance while we use a simple internet Brower. And the app is stand alone you don't necessarily need the Valentine V2 detector.

Great, for getting verbal traffic events on the road ahead just like Waze.

That depends…..everyone is different. My mom could never understand technologoy / Nav / GPS. My Dad had been using Garmins up into his 80’s. A variety of things occurred over the years….they just decline….

If you still have parents…. spend as much time with them as you can because they won’t be here forever. Some folks are lucky to have parents that are really good mentally & physically up until they pass. Other folks…. have Dimentia and Alzheimers for years and years before they pass.

You have that right! Enjoy your parents as much as you can. Forgive their mistakes just like they forgave yours as a child.
Alzheimer’s is a HORRIBLE way to reach the end of your life.

Just went to the dealer. It's forked. They are sending it off to be repaired.
Thanks for sharing.
I posted a photo so you can visualize what my 23 JT GPS nav does....
I get "100feet" or "400 feet" as I am passing the turn --too many turn arounds, ugh.
And it also can't find addresses that have been there before the car was made. It wouldn't let me and/or could not find the First Americans Museum in OKC as a point of interest or the actual address and it opened in 2020. So many issues with my JT, so sad.
Multiple home addresses it does not have in the system.

Manufacturers do not make maps, they buy them. Often they are old or impossible to update, causing the missing POI that you mention. Also, I do not like the place my GPS starts - always zoomed way in. When I back out to the distance that I like to use for navigation, the small road details disappear. My biggest complaint is I can’t load .GPX files into the nav system (the GPX file are normally dirt road or trail tracks). My current Garmin GPS, a 276Cx, is big and heavy. I use a bulletpoint dash mount and I am concerned that I am overloading the mount. I’ve recently been using my phone with the GAIA app displayed on the radio screen via CarPlay. I like how this looks, but I have had some connection issues when I off/on the vehicle. Using the app is further complicated by the fact that I use my phone for a camera.

Yes, I get that Jeep purchased their Nav system, but I would expect to get the most current version, car made May '23 doesn't have a business opened in '20 and was in google maps before '20 as they broke ground in '15. Just saying, it is extremely frustrating to get emails and texts to purchase an updated version while the one I got new was outdated -- when I owned a new Toyota the Nav updates were part of bumper to bumper warranty. (and I loved that nav/gps in the '19 highlander) maybe I should have bought a Tacoma TRO. I usually end up using my phone, but shouldn't have to !

TomTom in the 2024 and 2025 does it differently than the 23 and prior versions of NAV in the smaller head unit. .

Before 2024 and the upgraded radio/NAV, you had to start by selecting a state, then a city, then a street name, then the address.
That's how it knows to "gray out" numbers that don't exist, or prevent you from plugging in a street name that doesn't exist in that city.
If you got Mockingbird Lane in and tried to type in 1312 it wouldn't let you if the only address on Mockingbird lane was 1313.
my first business utilized a p.o. box for its address on checks and invoices. every once in a while i would be asked for a physical address when writing a check. i would say one three one three mockingbird lane. no one ever got it.
