Are gps units necessary anymore? With all the apps on phones or even on the screen in the jeep, why would I need a gps unit? Does it hold some maps or other info I can’t get through uconnect?

Only reason to get one is if you’re gonna be in an area with no kind of cell signal and you didn’t plan ahead and download the area before you got to the dead zone. A Starlink kit instead of a dedicated GPS unit would be a better choice, in my opinion.

What jav_eee said.
Some places a phone won't work well or have current maps, you an load a GPS with current maps. The Jeep's nav may also be out of date (especially the pre-2024 models)

Starlink would work if you just wanted something for the truck. An actual GPS unit is better if you want to use it for the truck and also for hiking, biking, motorcycles, hunting, rafting, sailing, etc.

That’s where the mini comes into play. It can do all that and is no bigger than your common 13” laptop.

You pack a Starlink mini and a power supply with you when hiking, biking, dirt bike? I don't have room for all that when a Garmin fits in a pocket and holds a charge for up to a month.
That's what I use on the bike or walking our woods.

Which Garmin holds a charge for that long?

Mine does unless continuously used. I put new batteries in it a while back and it holds a charge for weeks when not used. It may be antique, but it works fine.

I travel for work. Alot of the areas I'm in has no cell. I still run a GPS in my truck as well as a handheld sattalite GPS to send messages. I do have a StarLink Mini but the GPS is easy. We still use it when we travel and have cell as its just there ticking away. Dont have to remember to plug phone in, start a map etc. just simple.

Something like the Garmin Etrex 32x takes two AA batteries. Kind of the ultimate portable nav emergency backup. Tolerable if clunky usability, but the slow processor does save battery power.

The Garmin RV and auto models have better usability and update-ability than the older Jeep nav. Dunno about their newer version.

You (consumers/society - in general) need something else (in the truck) other than ‘cell related’ GPS. The obvious reasons…. No cell signal.
Not only that….. some folks don’t have (or don’t want )smart phones for the extra expense or lack of know-how. My newly retired brother still has a dumb phone.

With ‘Big Brother’ watching all of us (Uconnect/Sirius, Onstar), all the time - it’s unlikely the OEM Navigation/GPS would go away. The technology & structure Is there….. They’ll continue to offer OEM Navigation to make more $$.

Granted, I don’t know how any of it works (in terms of Uconnect GPS systems)…. I’m guessing it’s Satellite.

In the far far future…. I mean, how long with Cell technology last? Everyone will have Satellite phones. There’d be the Carplay equivalent for Satellite phones.
At that point…. The OEM Navigation (as we know it today) wouldn’t exist because we’d be using (and connecting with) their own Satellite technology (Uconnect, etc).

Ok…. It’s Monday and I think I just dove off the deep end. 🤪

Cell phones are already satellite, you can send and receive messages and calls outside of cell coverage now. Even my new smart watch has stand alone satellite connectivity so I can send and receive emergency messages and share my location if I'm stuck.

On my Stinger Horizon 10 headunit, when listening to Sirius XM, OTA radio (or really any source/screen that's not AA or Carplay), the separate GPS antenna provides the current time, onscreen lat/longitude, and compass heading direction. Initially, I didn't install the antenna because it wasn't needed for navigation using AA.

Can't recall if this is the case with the OEM UConnect units though.
