Dumbest hole left unfilled by Jeep yet! I thought I didn't like the bed holes by the tie downs. Carry gravel, grass clippings you will get your load into the tailgate. How you gonna get that stuff out? If it is steel then rust, if it is aluminum get corrosion. And, I have no use for mice or rats moving in, imagine the smell and the rust/corrosion? I will be getting the plug for mine. Amazon supplier doesn't carry the 2" x 3" grommet anymore but can be sourced on Ebay from (ugh) China. WTF Jeep?

There's valid reasons it's left open. IF you haul stuff like that, then you need to get one of those seals that closes that gap with the gate open so you can sweep dirt, leaves or rock right over the gap - it forms a bridge.
Don't blame Jeep - there's a reason they want stuff to drain and fall out the bottom. That tailgate isn't exactly sealed otherwise and that hole lets it drain and DRY out.

Non-engineers judging Jeep.

I've seen a lot of tailgates rust from the inside out because stuff got trapped and there wasn't enough air flow to dry them out.

I noted drain holes installed in the tailgate like every other pickup I have owned. I clean the drains there as well on the passenger doors in all my current vehicles; 90 Dakota Convertible, 94 GMC Suburban, 01 GMC Sonoma, 02 Tahoe, 04 Cad CTS. that is why they last...

Not an engineer, but experienced.

The Amazon link in this thread is still available. It's 1 ½" x 3". Not sure why those wouldn't work for you. How is it Jeep's fault you are having issues sourcing a grommet you're happy with?
