I have the FTM500DR predecessor, the FTM400DR. Kinda wish I didn't see your post, lol, now I'm itching to upgrade. :) My setup is an NMO on my rack, the base is strapped to the back of the drivers seat, mic and faceplate upfront on a bulletpoint system.

The dashcam is plugged into the "cigarette lighter" power source. The radio is plugged into my Jackery. I have it setup this way as to not draw from the vehicle battery as I sit and chat while the wife putters around doing her shopping (which can take a long, long time. Ha.)

I run the FTM400 also. Really want another but since they announced it was discontinued stock went thru the roof. The 500 display is too small for me. Anyway here is a shot of mine.

FTM400, CMX CB, APX8500 O3, Garmin Overlander, Garmin Inreach. Bulletpoint mount, CMM off road ball mount on grab bar with RAM arm.

Very nice - what's your primary use case for the APX?

Search and Rescue and other Public Safety uses. Does have some ham and GMRS but rarely use it for those.

My 2M / 70cm band And GMRS portables units mount. Works well even in the central mountains of florida (345 foot peak) I think there’s a landfill in pompano beach down south that’s taller.

So I just had an incredibly pedantic long, pretty much involuntary discussion/lecture, on ham being the way to go.
You can pick up a baofeng hand held ham and unless you’re in the antarctic, hit repeaters. Dude demonstrated while I was out in tecate. Gmrs isn’t super different from 2 meter ham, but the support is minimal. You won’t find repeaters anywhere, ymmv depending on local operators. There are some repeaters in my area but you better be hand held, you can’t get em from the valleys. Also ham is 1/4 the cost…. Trade off being a “test” which all the answers are available for.

Yeah, this wasn't meant to start a philosophical discussion on the merits of the different radio services. We're just sharing install ideas, antenna locations, etc.

Maybe one of these days Jeep will reserve space for radios, it seems so many of us have them.

I found this site ( mygmrs.com ) that updates GMRS repeater sites nationwide weekly. So far it’s pretty accurate.

I'm new to radios. Is there a HAM radio that is remote mounted that has the screen on the hand unit and the hand unit has a RJ45 plug?

Yes it's called the motorola APX O3 ($350ish for a used one off of ebay but you also need an APX radio for another $2000ish)

Sorry i was living out a dream.

Check out the Anysecu WP-9900. I haven't read much into it so i don't know if its type-accepted for ham use or not....

That one doesn't have an RJ45 plug for mic unit. I'd like to have one so that I can utilize the Lasfit passthru and mount the radio body behind dash.
