I HAD A FREAKING HEART ATTACK AND I WANT EVERYONE ON HERE TO KNOW HOW IMPORTANT IT IS TO CALL 911 QUICKLY!!!!!! DO NOT WAIT!!!!

I had a heart attack last Thursday and it has stopped it all! I am currently out of 3 day stay in Vanderbilt hospital and now staying with my sister and her family so that I can be monitored 24/7.

Vanderbilt is completely amazing and again why I am able to write this to you instead of lying in a box(or ashes in an urn) waiting for burial!

unfortunately I have bad genetics! Good health through clean living and eating plus exercise enabled me to survive with the excellent care I received!

I am a health nut and run long distances, ride mountain bikes, hike, CrossFit.

That’s right for all you fit dudes out there like me, it can happen to you. 56y/o 6’1” tall, 167 lbs… right now 162lbs… non smoker (never have), whole food eater, Mntn biker, no drugs, CrossFit in am, hand stand push-ups and all that morning of the attack. I’ve never had heart issues.

Ate a healthy breakfast and suddenly chest pain weakness diaphoresis, left hand numbness, shoulder pain left, and pain in back of my head. I called 911 and saved my life. 10 min for ambulance to arrive, 10 min to begin transport, 1st full cardiac arrest in ambulance, then a second cardiac arrest In ambulance. Thank God for an excellent 1st responder team as well as the best paramedic I could ask for… she saved my life!!

Ambulance diverted to nearest hospital, Life flighted to major hospital, immediate stent with 100% blockage of left coronary artery. After opening up artery with stent I had a third cardiac arrest!
5-10 minutes is all I had to make a call to save my ass and thankfully I did it (I live by myself).

know your symptoms!!
- along with usual cyclical intense chest pain
- sudden chest pain
- weakness (once I was on the floor I could not get back up).
-diaphoresis = excessive sweating, my t-shirt was soaked in 30 seconds
- left hand numbness
- shoulder pain left
- pain in back and base of my head

DO NOT WAIT, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY!! Even if you miss diagnose and a big fart takes care of the problem (though my previous clinical experience told me heart attack not indigestion)…. Don’t be afraid to call 911!!!!

Glad you are still with us. I am a lot like you in eating healthy and working out, and yet have high cholesterol. My dr says it is genetic.

Sounds like you absolutely saved yourself. That's all some excellent advice. Only thing I would add is take aspirin if you can after calling 911.

When I was on active duty, a senior NCO in my squadron was doing a PT test. After passing it, he sat in his truck alone, had a heart attack, and died. They had to call his wife, who was also active duty, and she had to fly back from a deployed location. Awful all around. I would say anyone in their 50s or older should make sure they aren't alone after working out or at the very least, have a cell phone and know the symptoms.

First, glad you made it through such an event.

Second, thanks for the reminder. I'm 53, 5'9", 150 lbs, plenty of exercice - mountain biking, basketball with my son, etc. - regular checkups too and seemingly healthy as can be. I'm afraid that if what happened to you happened to me, I'd just be thinking "I'm healthy as can be, this can't be anything major." And I'd be wrong, as in dead wrong.

That is scary shit. I have been a long-distance runner for over 35 years. You would think that and decent eating would prevent this type of situation. Obviously not.

Thanks for posting. Glad you are OK and are recovering!!

Glad you made it out and trusted your instincts.

Hoping you have a full recovery. Living well is certainly not in vain - despite our genetics. It may have very well have kept you alive long enough to make it to the hospital.

Glad you are still here. Best wishes on a full and quick recovery. I'm a firm believer. When it's your time there is nothing you can do about it. It wasn't your time. Speedy recovery and best wishes for you and your family during the holidays.

Thanks we all need a wake up every now and then so we will do the right thing. My family doctor kept telling me I was just dealing with acid reflux for a year at age 38. I've always been super active and not overweight. I knew something was definitely wrong so I sought another doctor and ended up with a 6 vain heart bypass. I was even digging up top soil and moving it with a shovel in my yard two days before surgery no problems. The veins in my heart didn't Clog up they just swiveled up and died. My heart surgeon said he had never seen that happen to anyone before and said in my condition I would probably only live five more years. Thank God it's now 19 1/2 years later and I'm still going. So glad that you made it. We should pay attention to how we fill and what to look for. Merry Christmas
