That's one reason for the move away from certain street or traffic signs and different designs for the streets - the round-about as we call it here, for example, gets rid of stop signs and forces a person to wake up a bit while at least keeping traffic moving. My wife hates them, I'm not fond of them, but I do see an advantage.

Years and years ago we used to hit a local gambling joint with slot machines every few months (then we decided it would be cheaper just to drive by the place and drop a 20 out the window and keep moving - that was our joke, anyway)
My wife and I had been playing quarter slots for a while and there was all of this clanging and ringing and alarms and lights and my wife looks around and asked a couple of people what was wrong, what happened. She was advised by those people - you just won.......that's YOUR machine.

Anyway, I could also never just leave. If there was zero damage at all, not even a scuff, yeah but if there was so much as a scuff on a black bumper I'd either try to find that person or give them a full description of what happened, my vehicle and info on how to contact me and my insurance agent's info. (these days I'd also take a picture or two)
If something is my fault - gotta own up to it. I think a big part of that is how we were raised.
I don't know where we are failing but accountability has gone out the window. The fact that people are surprised OP didn't just leave is blowing my mind.

I was amazed that someone would repeatedly back in to a vehicle and just walk off without even looking to see if there was damage.
I was coming out of the gym a couple of years ago when a woman was trying to pull her minivan out of a parallel spot. She backed up into the car behind her a few times, then slammed into the car in front of her hard enough that it lifted the whole back end up on the suspension... I thought it was going to lift the back tires off the ground. It was as though she was trying to push it out of the way.

When she finally got out of the parking space, she drove off, then came back around the block a minute later and sideswiped at least 3 cars on her way by, and just kept on trucking.

I just cannot understand why Insurance Rates are so high?! LOL! I am doing my best to teach my 7yr old how to be a good person. However, the questions he asks about "Why did he/she do that?" is crazy. Its as though no one cares about anyone else anymore...it just plain old SUCKS!

Things happen. You showed your integrity by owning up to your mistake, and making sure the other owner knew it occurred. You are also probably the type that returns your grocery cart to the cart stall. And you go to Hooters. I think I like you already.

Kinda off topic...., Funny, when I first went to Europe many years ago, I was shocked how people park their cars. There is no parking in the big cities like Paris and Athens, and when the locals park, it is love tap front, love tap back, and park. Same thing when leaving. Every bumper I saw was marked up, or even cracked. Not sure if it is still going on, but, I remember remarking to a foreign colleague --- if you park like that in the USA, you will be in trouble... lol..

In Korea, especially larger cities around apartments (most people live in apartment buildings - tall ones) there's almost no parking so when you get home, you park where-ever there's room for your car and you have a sign in the window with your phone number. If someone else needs out, you go move your car so they can get out and you move into their parking spot.......... and the process repeats. You almost always have to park behind another car or in such a way other cars can't leave. I asked my son what's up with all of the phone numbers in almost every car around his apartment complex - are they all for sale? Nope, it's a necessity there, so someone else can get their car out. I thought I had pictures but can't find them now. I do have pic and video of someone moving out of an upper floor apartment. They've got that covered, too.
