Aluminum panels must be treated with a primer before painting. If not, the paint will eventually bubble due to poor bond. The edges of the hood and hinges are the usual places this is seen bc the primer sometimes doesn't hit those areas as thoroughly.
Speculation?
or you have proof, or reason "primer doesn't hit those areas............"?
Have you watched the process?
There's no reason in the world for primer to not be at the edge of the hoods. It's robotically applied, and depending on the Jeep being built - electrostatically applied protection is put on first.
It's not just aluminum that needs primer - steel does, too. So saying it's only happening on the hood because aluminum needs primer is problematic because steel does as well. Further, what about the rocker panels? The door edges? For that matter, any edges?
Why do they get plenty of paint but not enough primer? It's all robotically applied.
IS there a reason the hoods don't get primer but the rocker panel area always does? It's way down low.
Ford and GM have the same issue - you are saying that none of them apply primer properly to all vehicles - and it's only going to be a problem with aluminum?

Nozzles on the side, and it almost appears electrostatic - meaning the primer is drawn to the metal, the way I would powder coat something.

I found bubbles on the hinges on the driver front and passenger rear door on my 2020 JT, took it to the dealer, their paint shop warranty specialist took pics and measurements of the issue, told me they will submit the claim to Jeep and reach out for scheduling when they have approval. That was 6 weeks ago, zero contact from them. Stopped by last week to check on an update…”it takes awhile” was the update. Then they dropped a bomb that has me very concerned before I left…the manager told me you can only submit One claim for the paint warranty for the entire time frame of the paint warranty! No exceptions!! What a load of crap! So members, look your rigs over very carefully before going forward with these snakes. You would think if you’ve been painting Jeeps since 1941, you would have trained your workers or robots to actually do it correctly.

21’ Gladiator with 6,000 mi. Just noticed paint bubbling along hood edge. I’m in central Florida so rust is not an issue here. Anyone else have issues with this and any issue with having it covered under warranty?

Just noticed this on mine. A couple small bubbles starting. Maybe if my dealer is cool I can get a JTR hood out of it lol. Not counting on it.

I have a 21 JL and a 23 JT I notice that on the JL there is no real space between hinge and door, and its been painted over some. With the JT it looks like there is some sort of spacer between the hinge and door....I guess Jeep is trying some measures to address the hinge bubbling issue.

Yup. Drivers door hinges and frame refinishing at rear tow hooks for me at the 8 month mark.

Good luck on that? will be bringing mine in for warranty in January. Too busy this time of year to be without the Jeep.

Ok !! I was in the colilision and restoration field for over 30 plus years Probably 40. We painted aluminum in the 70s and 80s with no problems. The corrosion we are seeing I believe is a preparation problem and the corrosion is already in or on the panels before priming and painting ( mass production certainly adds to this problem.. we used zinc chromate primer back in the day after prepping which is most likely outlawed in this day and age. The car manufacturers don’t seem to care because the numbers of repairs vs profit , they think they are ahead repairing these under warranty and maybe they will last till out of warranty or not corrode at all ? It’s sad but it’s the truth !! Now for more later years with epoxy primers Well into the 2000s. We still didn’t have corrosion problems but we did the the important prep that was needed.

Wow, if that’s true that sucks! I would look into it further and not just take his word for it. The warrant does not state that at all.

Looks like I'll be taking a fine tooth comb to mine.

When taking pics of my before/after lift numbers, I saw a little bubble in the pic. Well, s**t. The first chink in the armor. I double checked yesterday and I have a couple spots on the left side (all I wanted to check at the moment).

Hmm. Maybe I'll get this repaired and then replace it with a CF or fiberglass hood.

Make sure to check your door hinges as well, they seem to have issues as well.

Mine is going into the dealer paint shop Monday. They said it will take 2-4 weeks. Go figure?? Sure am glad I have another truck to drive. But I will say they gave me no hassle. They inspected the hinges and scheduled me to repaint right away, no questions asked. They said I was the 3rd one that day to come in.
