The rear-mounted spare tire is one of the most overlooked storage opportunities on an off-road or overland build.

The challenge is that most storage solutions either take up valuable roof rack space, eat into interior cargo room, or require complicated fabrication that doesn’t make sense for a trail-ready setup.

We wanted a better use of that space.

The American Adventure Lab M.A.S.S. Spare Tire Platform (STP) turns your spare tire into a rigid, modular cargo platform, giving you a strong exterior mounting surface for recovery gear, storage, and trail essentials without sacrificing roof or interior space.

Features & Benefits:

• Fits most vehicles running 33"–40" spare tires (carrier dependent)

• Lightweight 5052 aluminum construction

• Weighs approximately 18 lbs

• Supports up to 100 lbs of evenly distributed load (dependent on carrier strength and setup)

• No drilling or permanent vehicle modifications required

• Secure strap-based mounting system for easy installation and removal

• Designed with the M.A.S.S. modular grid system for accessory integration

• Compatible with a wide range of Jeep, Bronco, Toyota, and overland platforms

• Works best with swing-out tire carriers for maximum stability

• Creates usable rear-mounted storage space without interfering with roof rack systems

• Designed and manufactured in St. George, Utah, USA

Installation Notes:

• Simple strap-based installation around the spare tire

• No cutting, drilling, or fabrication required

• Easily removable if your setup changes

• Best performance when paired with a sturdy swing-out tire carrier

• May require adjustments depending on tire size and carrier geometry

Frequently Asked Questions

Will this fit my vehicle?

The STP is designed to work with most 33"–40" spare tires found on popular platforms including Jeep Wrangler, Ford Bronco, Toyota 4Runner, and similar overland vehicles.

How much weight can it hold?

Up to 100 lbs of evenly distributed gear, though actual capacity depends on your spare tire carrier and mounting configuration.

Do I need to drill into my vehicle?

No. The system uses a fully strap-based design with no permanent modifications required.

Why use the spare tire instead of a roof rack?

It keeps weight low, frees up roof rack space for tents and larger gear, and improves accessibility since you’re not climbing to retrieve equipment.

Will it interfere with my tailgate?

In most setups, no—but clearance depends on tire size, wheel offset, and carrier design.

If you’re looking to turn unused space into functional storage without overcomplicating your build, the M.A.S.S. Spare Tire Platform is a straightforward, modular solution.

We're happy to answer any questions about fitment, compatibility, or installation.

Do you have instructions on how to mount this to the Gladiator spare tire?
Yes! I’d love to see how that mounts to my spare tire! 🤣 Great place to store my firewood!

Just to clarify, this product was designed for vehicles equipped with an aftermarket spare tire carrier rather than the factory Bed-mounted spare tire setup found on the Gladiator.

That said, the installation process would be essentially the same on a compatible spare tire carrier, so the instructions should still provide a good reference for the mounting procedure!

Gladiator doesn't have a OEM tailgate mounted spare tire, it hangs under the bed. Might want to do some market research before posting.....

Ahh yes, the “factory tailgate-mounted spare tire setup found on the Gladiator” . . . . . .

Haha, that was a typo on our end! Yes, we're aware that the spare tire is located underneath the vehicle. Thanks for catching that I've gone ahead and updated it.

If this has a molle type system on the platform it could work inside a bedcap. The only thing I don’t like about possibly mounting the spare inside the cap is losing 37-38x12.5” of storage space plus vertical storage above the tire. This would solve he vertical storage issue. It’s intriguing for sure.

my question for this style thing is what do you do with it if you have to swap the tire? Its always been my luck for the tire to shred and grenade itself on the highway....

I love how folks immediately come in here and try to be smartasses since the Gladi *in stock form* mounts the spare underneath, as if it's impossible that some folks might have relocated their spare to a rear bumper mount and could utilize these products (which is common for overland builds, also which the Gladiator is commonly used for). I get it, this was likely a copy-paste post from the Wrangler forums and would be better placed in the Camping and Overlanding sub-forum, but it's still plenty valid for here.

I have been contemplating if I want to relocate my spare to the rear bumper SO I CAN utilize more storage options like these, as well as utilize the factory spare location for water or additional fuel. But Apline brings up a good point, what happens when you shred your spare?

if you are going to try to sell us stuff, at least get your market right. Half the posts around here are some vendor who has paid for the privilege of hawking us crap. Add in the constant scrolling cookie based ads on the side, at a certain point i can't help but speak up. Its more about buying shit then it is about owning a jeep.....

You still have a wheel and that’s really what it connects to. If it’s a concern you can always add a rubberized mat to the bottom of the rack just in case it’s needed in this circumstance.

Fairly certain this is the Jeep thing I've been told about that I don't understand.
