I have been jeeping for a while, I have and have always had Rubicon’s with auto disconnect, I fully understand what to do when off road. I am about to take my father on his first real jeeping experience on a Badge of Honor trail in Texas and Arizona. He lives in Texas. I have tried to explain to him that he is going to need to disconnect his sway bar, he has a sport with 37’s He is stubborn and does not understand what disconnecting your sway bar means. I have thought about paying for him to go to the jeep 4x4 course In California but he would probably say no. An advice guys to show him the way.

Well experience is probably the teacher he needs. My dad is almost 71 and can be a stubborn old goat.

Man I wish my dad was into off-roading (for reference he’s 60 years old and retired). He has a 2007 FJ Cruiser too which is obviously a great adventure vehicle. He loves my JT as well so there’s a clear affinity for offroad vehicles. He’s just not into off-roading it seems nor long travel to get to trails.

Anyway I have no advice but hopefully I can rip off some advice from others ha. Id love to get my dad out on some adventures out west!

Are you driving, or is he? This is a big first step. Can you take him on an easier course first? Drive connected, and then disconnect to illustrate the difference. Go slow and talk through what you are thinking and seeing and doing. Have him get out and watch.

I am new to jeeps and when I got mine I took it out on a dirt road and played with all the features. Even though I may not have been in the right situation, I was able to read/watch videos and understand what was happening. I got out of the truck and looked at it to see. You will be able to do it with him and show him what is happening. For me it was knowing what was gonna happen before hitting any trails as I wanted to make somewhat good decisions instead of going in blind and not knowing at all what I should be using or not. I did do a Jeep Adventure in Moab too. The guys there were awesome and definitely helpful with getting to understand the jeep. plus it was a great family trip. Good Luck and Happy Jeeping

Buy him a set of Apex disconnects. Then show him what they do. Or just show him a bunch of YouTube University videos.

I am 62, bought my Gladiator in 2021 after my son and I went to EJS. My son has a Rubicon Wrangler and we went through some stuff I never imagined a fairly stock vehicle could get past. I was hooked and now we meet twice a year to go “Jeeping”. Aways EJD and some other cool spot. He is in Arizona and I am in Idaho, we schedule trips for the year every January. Great memories and if anything breaks it can be fixed. Tell your dad to take it easy, get comfortable, and gain confidence, it worked for me.

Get and install the Apex on his truck, tell him he can use them or not but, but you want him to have a good time! I'm old , stubborn and good looking, and the Apex disconnects are the first swaybar disconnects I have had, tell your dad he isn't old enough to still learn. .....Jack

Just let him do what's comfortable for him. I'm the old man who's the old school 4 wheeler. That said I don't feel comfortable doing what I'VE done years ago. Let him slowlly find his pace!.
