To my knowledge, the best deal in the country is Gupton in TN. As far as I can tell, they're the ONLY dealer playing hardball on price with 8% under invoice plus any additional manufacturer incentives. Unfortunately, they're in TN. For more than half the country, that makes the math considerably more difficult when trying to order a truck.

Someone in the Gupton thread recently mentioned a shipping quote to somewhere an 18 hour drive away of $1K (which is actually pretty good based on my experience, and especially so right now with driver shortages). It occurred to me that it wouldn't be too hard to put together a truck's worth of trucks, and save some serious money on shipping. Without having had an opportunity to dig too deep into it, I believe a semi truck transport would be the best way to go, and a typical trailer holds 6 or 7 vehicles. If a half dozen or so people in an area could agree on a buy time and pickup location, one of them would have to coordinate with the shipper (maybe they get some percentage of their fee split out over the remainder for the time since it can be a bit of an ordeal), and a single pickup, single drop off transport of a half dozen-ish trucks could get downright cheap!

The downside as I see it:
-You don't get to inspect the truck prior to taking delivery. If there's something off, it may be difficult to get Gupton to rectify it, or may even require shipping it back or something. I don't know...
-People are still going to have to travel some. Much less, but likely some.
-Someone has to handle the PITA that is shipping companies.
-Also, having kept an eye on order/delivery dates, in order to get a half dozen trucks on a single truck, it may end up to where one truck holds the others up. Having to wait could be an issue, and Gupton may not like the idea of storing the five or so trucks while the sixth is delayed for unknown reasons.
-Getting a half dozen otherwise strangers to cooperate on something can be a challenge, and it only takes one asshole to screw up the whole thing.

If Gupton is willing to play ball, some of this can be fixed. Other things... depends on who is participating...

Is this interesting to anyone? Any other major flaws in the strategy?

No one thinks this is worthwhile?
I think there are way too many variables to make it feasible. Mostly the ones you listed.

  • The delivery time varies wildly for Jeep. For example, I ordered a JTRD on July 5 and I'm going to pick it up this week. That's 3 months. Others got theirs in a month.
  • You'd have to live somewhat close to each other to make accepting delivery feasible.
  • Trying to coordinate 4-7 people's payments and delivery schedules with a trucking company is going to be a nightmare.
All of that to save a few hundred probably isn't worth it for most people that are custom ordering a Jeep.
