After several years without a Jeep, I'm finally back in the US fulltime and on the hunt for a Gladiator with a diesel. I'm going to look at one today, but I've run into something that I can't quite identify and I'm hoping someone can help me out. I know the original Max Tow models had weird fenders and Dana 44s. This one doesn't list Max Tow on the sticker or on the build sheet from FCA, but the build sheet shows all of the individual components, including axles, cooling, etc. The fender flares look a bit odd too. Did they stop listing Max Tow specifically in 2022? Do you all think this is a Max Tow variant? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It simply doesn't exist. It already has all the parts that come on a max tow package (minus fendors), but because of the additional weight of the diesel it has a lower payload and tow rating thus no "max tow". I believe the non-rubicon diesels have a tow rating of 6,500 lbs. But don't take my word for it - my JTRD only has a paltry 899 lbs payload and 6,000 lbs tow rating.

Max Tow is a standalone option. It is listed after the standard equipment. It is NOT available on diesels. A Max Tow has wide axles (same as a Rubi, without the lockers). That is also not available / present on a Sport diesel. The fenders pictured are normal painted fenders for a non Rubi / Mojave. They don't have the small lip around the top and back on the textured plastic portion.

Got it. Thanks for the info. Oddly enough, the axles here are listed differently than the other truck I'm looking at. That's what really threw me off.

You can input any VIN here and get the detailed build sheet.
Much more information than what's on the sticker.
Build Sheet by VIN

If you really need to pull anything close to the maximum tow rating, you should probably be looking at a more capable full sized truck. I'd say anything over 80% of the max rating truly deserves an upgrade.

Here is the truth…

Any gladiator really shouldn’t tow more than 4000lbs regularly. Can they… sure…. But they are not full sized trucks and do struggle with high altitude, heat, etc.

If you are buying a gladiator just to tow, don’t…

Here is another fun fact.

I have an ecodiesel rubicon on a 2.5” lift and 35” tires.

I tow in Colorado, 3500lb rpod camper (on a scale)

I get 17mpg avg while towing. My buddy in the Gas version gets 9.5/10mpg on the same routes, same lift / tires and a very similar trailer.

If you tow weights of 3500-4000 you are better suited with the ecodiesel. It never has to maintain high rpm, it just chugs along pulling hard at 2500rpm and is way more efficient under load than the pentastar engine.

Definitely not pulling close to rating. In fact, I'm downsizing to this because I don't need towing capacity anymore. What intrigued me about the max tow was the axle upgrades and engine cooling. South Texas is hot!

The ecodiesel sports the same axles (cast knuckles/ wide track) as the max tow, has the bigger fan, alternator, battery as a heads up.

But it produces way more heat (as it’s modern diesel)

I still will tell people any day towing moderate weight, the ecodiesel is a better choice.

Just don’t keep it under boost long periods of time in high heat.

Don’t let the CP4 stuff worry you either.

I run hotshots EDT and am at 35k…. Zero issues so far. (Besides an annoying rattle in the roof due to my roof rack….)

Not scared of CP4. My Ram Ecodiesel has over 150k trouble free miles, with much of that towing a 7x16 enclosed.

But this is the retirement truck. No need to move and haul heavy trailers anymore.

That's actually what led me to post the question. The build sheet had all of the individual components, but didn't specifically say Max Tow.

those are some expensive Sports.. I'd look at a Rubicon or Mojave for that $. This is coming from someone with a Max Tow Sport S.

EDIT, just now seeing it's a Diesel. Makes sense now, my bad.

That was something I didn't know, but checked my Max Tow knuckles and the magnet stuck.
