Lease? He didn't own it.
That difference aside - that's BS. I know many dozens of people who have modified vehicles and not lost a penny because of it. I'm one of them. You think many of my vehicles have been stock? In fact my agent tells me to track any extra money I've put into vehicles that increase their value over stock. I've had claims and never been denied.
Maybe laws are different in Canada, but in the states, it means a huge percentage of vehicles on the road would be denied coverage.
Anyway, never heard of such bunk before - imagine all of us who have had headers, gone from single to dual exhaust, or make other such changes not being insured.

Sounds like that company was trying to pull a fast one and got caught.

In the US at least, it depends on the modifications and your policy. An exhaust wouldn't normally be a problem, but they might not want to pay for the exhaust itself, unless you declared it. You can actually even have your modifications covered too, if you get additional coverage, with some insurers. I could have on my old bug, but since it's as stock as it could be for an old car, I chose not to. I see you're in Canada. So things may be different.

That was a new adjuster probably trying to put one over on a young (naive) driver. If it really disqualified him, they wouldn't have eventually paid.

I totaled my wife's loaded Grand Cherokee years ago - a 2003 WJ. I loaded it up with accessories, running boards, other stuff. The adjuster checked it out and gave me a check for way over book value even for a top vehicle - because of the accessories and care he said I'd give it (up until that day, that is, bummer - loved that Jeep)

Make sure you add/declare it on your insurance and save all of your receipt's. It's not that much to add stuff. Under Geico I have added $7500.00 worth of my mods on my 2021 Gladiator for $50.00 more every 6 months. Back in 2009 I had a Tacoma TRD Sport 4x4 with $6k in extras. I got hit by a uninsured driver. The truck got totaled and I didn't loose any money.

Cool deal. I had a similar thing happen a few years ago also with Geico. I think they are great to work with.

They pay only after Global News got involved.
Insurance companies will try every trick in the book to decline any claim.
Most well known insurer here in NZ won't touch any vehicle with mod worth over $1200

My experience was like ShadowsPapa. After the hurricane through a tree on my wife's 13 Wrangler Unlimited the agent gave over book value due to bumpers, rock sliders. I think different company's are easer to work with.

Canada is like bizarro world when it comes to stuff like this. Common sense gets thrown out the window.
