See my 96 xj looks fine underneath hopefully like you said once the patina sets in on the mojave all the bright orange rust wont be blasting me in the face. I appreciate your advice on the treatment options. Because this Mojave is my baby i need it to last i dont see something coming along that will make me want to sell it off unless it becomes a money pit.

Just make sure you give it a light once over with a wire brush before the fluid film. Should be gtg. ?

I don't think I saw it mentioned, so I'll throw it out there. I'm a fan of crc 6026. I treat everything under the vehicle that doesn't get hot.

It dries to an almost rubbery feel and will last up to two years. I do a few trips to hatteras every year and it holds up great. Fluid film is a good product, but it will hang onto the sand and grit. With the crc, you can spray the undercarriage without washing off the treatment. Just depends on your environment.

Is it something you use once you inhibit the rust with another product or do you just spray the rust with the crc? Thanks and appreciate your input.

Good question. It is a rust inhibitor/preventer. I treated my undercarriage upon delivery and did not have any corrosion prior to application. Recommend removing any surface rust before treating.

Has anyone tried commercial products like Ziebart?

I've seen those scare videos before - as one who has restored cars for decades and owned both "undercoated" and "non-undercoated" - let's just say I have a 1982 SX4 with factory Ziebart and it's 100% rust free.
My 70 Javelin came from PA, went to KS, then ended up in MN - and I know there's snow and salt up there. It was undercoated as part of the original sale - the undercoating preserved parts any other similar car would have seen rot away. Floor pans were pristine, rocker panels - perfect, sills - solid, fenders, perfect.
My 73 - no undercoating and it had some serious rot.

I've had new vehicles undercoated and none of them ever had issues.
My Ford did not have protection and was experiencing some frame flaking and rust in other areas.

I suspect most of what's seen in such videos is more a matter of ownership and such than the protection itself.
If undercoating caused rust you'd think I would have seen or experienced it. I would absolutely have it done again.

I go by my restoration experience - I get 'em protected.
You do need to maintain things - if it isn't applied properly, if things aren't cleaned up, or it's damaged and you let it go, yeah, it's a problem. But IMO, it protects.
Any vehicle will rot if not cared for - keep the dust, sand and silt out of the frames and out of panel joints! I could show some details on what causes body and frame rot........

(interesting the same video pops up each time undercoating is mentioned LOL)

The rubber undercoatings were a novel idea at the time, though with heat and age the rubber cracks... the result is moisture enters and rots it out.
In all of the restorations I've done the biggest issue was dust, dirt and sand trapped in channels, in rocker panel areas, frame rails or where panels were spot welded together. When two panels are laid overlapping and spot welded there's a tiny gap that gets filled with dust and dirt, it gets wet and stays wet. Somewhere I have pics of the repairs I made and how it rotted from between the panels outward, not from the coating below (the top panel was the most rotted, the bottom or the lower panel was hardly affected.
Drain holes get plugged and people don't clear them and keep the dirt out. Bottom two pictures show examples of drains that get plugged and rot happens.

The stuff I'm referring to is more of a "tar". It is removed with solvents like mineral spirits. It takes a lot of years for it to "crack" and it can be sealed over again.

This is 1982 - I washed the underside of the car and sprayed black over it to make it look fresh for show -

This is a 1970 - I did wash the undercoating and sprayed with black paint for show-

Floor pans, trunk and frame rails - perfect. The undercoating was starting to crack on the front frame rails (DUH, 4 DECADES later) so I removed the loose stuff with scraper and re-applied 3M undercoating in spots.

Another 1970 - dealer applied undercoating - These pictures are un-touched, original protection applied in December 1969 just before the new owner took delivery. Car was a PA car originally.

My 68 Camaro convertible was undercoated when new. Driven over 160k by my father though CT winters with studded Polyglas F70-14s on the rear. After restoration it still retains its original rust-free floors, rockers and trunk floor. Amazing.

I use the CRC HD Corrosion Inhibitor as part of my arsenal. I have found that if you remove any heavy rust scale first, the CRC HDCI will penetrate and seal and remaining rust quite well. However, because it 'dries', it does not continue to creep long-term after application like 'wet' products do. Wet products are things like Fluid Film or ACF-50.

Yeah I agree the tar stuff was half way decent, and it was quite a chore removing it when I redid my YJ frame.
