You may wanna scroll past this one but...

I was flying some family around in a small twin engine plane. My brother wanted my 5 year old nephew to sit up front next to me just for the experience of being close to the controls and he could see out in front of the wing. As were leveled off I set the power and started a left turn when the #2 engine quit. I looked over at the center console and saw my nephew with the #2 mixture knob (starves the engine of fuel) in his hand and pulled all the way back (yes I did tell him no to touch anything before we took off).

Soooooo, I hate automatic start-stop. 🤣

In my experience people start screaming when the ESS does it's thing.

YIKES! Nothing like starving an engine running at a fair RPM.
Luckily you didn't have to get out and spin the prop to get it going again.

I did save fuel that day though! 🤣

Stop start saves fuel, it's easily measurable.

For rolling traffic you just ease off the break let it start and if you don't go over (I forget exactly 5mph? it wont engage again, this is the bumper to bumper rolling setting).

If I commuted I would 100% leave it working.

Of course if I commuted I would not have a brick on 35's with a 3" lift as a commuter either but there is that.

Mines permanently turned off, but I have issues with it and the supercharger tune so what ever.
I run an Interchiller which relies on AC running so I have it permanently turned off. I used an Autostop Eliminator. Plugs into the security gateway cable . Took 60seconds to install. With SC you don't want it stop/starting.

Everyone misses the full point of it. Emissions while idling and fuel use. Edmunds And others have absolutely proven the fuel savings....see his other threads on this.
My mean/mode time while stopped and idling is less than 3s, often times at a 3-way or 4-way stop sign, just long enough to make a legal stop. In city traffic, where folks are stopped at lights for 20s or more, sure, I agree with you. It’s signs vs lights. In the US, roughly half of the population is within a few hundred miles of the coasts. On the grand scale, i can see it helping to reduce our nation’s fuel consumption, agreed.

For the other 50% ( roughly), I’m not convinced, nor am I convinced that any this testing was applied to the folks that don’t see traffic lights often.

I’m going to go see if I can find, online, what conditions these tests were performed in; if you have links to that kind of literature, please provide them. Thanks in advance.

This doesn’t read, to me, like it’s representative for the vast majority of folks that live outside of the demographic for areas that don’t have very many stop lights.

It does seem impressive for those that would typically have longer idle times.

He's obsessed. His last thread on this was loosing steam. Looks to me like he's desperately looking to. Validate his opinions and hatred of something that has existed for FIFTY YEARS and is proven tech used by several other companies.
Once this thread loses steam or he finds another video, another will be started. There are dozens of threads on this going back 5 years in these forums. It's been discussed more than just a little.
I guess it feels good, he'll keep doing it or until 100% agree or validate his hate of it.

Crap, the more you know, the more that you realize that there is so much to learn. How many freaking test cycles are there, and who/how do they pick which cycle for their results?

Edmunds talks about the improved build quality, also referring to AGM batteries as longer lived ( I disagree, b/c I can’t find a 5year nor 7year warranty around here for agm )

To a degree, my findings all appear to have a healthy dose of cherry-picking and/or confirmation bias for those with longer idle times, typical of city scenarios. I’m still unable to find results that include a healthy statistical sample size of at least 400 that spans the wide variety of various use cases that you would expect to find, that’s truly representative of the whole.

I doubt it. We have a couple Subarus at work that actually display the volume of fuel saved and after having them since late 2022 the number is laughably small. The response time to start it is unacceptable on this and basically anything that doesn't use a starter/generator so I disable it every time I start the truck.
