Less paved roads helped the tires last longer.
You never have driven over red dog. It's like driving over broken glass.

Red dog. Look up coal mine refuse.

These are closer to the looks of the gladiator than a "A". The lineage really does show through.

What makes me LOL about these two though, is they both have what were regarded as the best offroad tires for something like 30 years, and if you couldn't get to where you were going with them something was wrong with you. Has anyone ever seen these tires wear out? Rubicon trail was travelled often with Jeeps like these. Yet now you must have a minimum size of 37 to go anywhere...
Well I did the Rubicon in my 73 CJ-5 in the late 70s with only wider rims and I think the tires were about 31s. Tore off the stock steps though.

Wow some of you...... why didn't you just bitch about the 2 extra doors.. smh

But it does have a resemblance, front wheels pushed more forward, rear not really centered on the bed with a lot of rear overhang, plus the described roofline and windshield

Yep. If you go back far enough they all copied Ford.

Sorry, Daimler by 30 years, Chevrolet in the teens.......Ford only took the ideas of others. Its sort of like who invented radio. It's not who many textbooks say.

My neighbor said that a local farmer has one under a lean-to not too far from me. I've tried to find out WHO it was but it's like my neighbor knows the guy won't sell and won't be bothered.
I'm not giving up.
He said it's got a SBC in it now - I have 4 engines sitting around that could go into it, including a 4.0 - or for more fun, a 401.

Stand back from the front corner and look down the side of the truck. It's more noticeable on a stock Overland with running boards, street tires, and the 18 inch wheels. The older you are, the more likely you are to see it.
nope

I’m pretty sure the design team copied more off of the old defender 110 pickup. I looks very similar

How about they copied off the old JLU and put a box on it like any step side pickup?
Can't have a fleetside box on a truck that has front fenders, can we?
So they copied the Wrangler, put a longer frame under the Wrangler body and put a box on the back. They copied themselves?

Didn't they literally just put a bed on the back of a wrangler? Aesthetically, anyway, I know the frame is different.

So since the Wrangler copied off an old jeep, so did the gladiator. But also, so did the defender.

But you're right, it does look a lot like an old defender truck. I think it's because both copied the same source. The defender was very much inspired by original Jeeps, as are Wranglers, and therefore gladiators.
