Still skeptical. I would be thrilled if these new Inline-6 engines were actually available in vehicles on dealer lots. But I just don't see it happening.

There's something uniquely cool about an Inline-6; gobs of torque, smooth as butter because it's inherently balanced, amazing durability and decent fuel economy at the same time. The Jeep 4.0 liter is legendary, but Chrysler couldn't squeeze the necessary MPGs from it for CAFE. While a turbo will certainly boost power, I'm not sure it will help MPGs which is one of the reasons I'm skeptical.

Meh! I assume it's going to be a DI turbocharged engine with all the problems that go with them.
I'm sure it will have plenty of power but I would still take a V8 if I had the option. Don't get me wrong. I generally like the I6 and have owned several, including the Ford 300 and Jeep 4L. They were great engines but I kinda always wished I had spent a little more for the V8.

For an old Boomer like me, nothing stirs the soul like the sound of a healthy V8 or a big radial aircraft engine.

My guess is that they’ll pair it with a battery as a hybrid across the board for most applications. That’ll help the MPG issue.

hopefully we see this in the JT at some point with more power output....them dumping the JLU engine in the JT is insulting.

The I6 in my Supra gets 25 mpg when I'm having fun and I can get over 30 on freeway trips. That's a 380 hp engine ; so an I6 can get good gas mileage. Granted that car is much more aerodynamic.

Looking forward to it. But I am a bit bummed that it took me decades to have the disposable income to enjoy a big NA V8 just before they disappear. But I could learn to love an i6. Maybe my next JT? Or in a RAM.

Anything new that isn't electric is great to hear. I hope it is successful and gives everyone another option. Guess I really have to order a 392 before they are no longer available.

or a big radial aircraft engine.
The USN loved their radials.

A friend of my dad's has several huge radials. I know airplanes but know nearly nothing about radials. Photos from a visit to my dad's friends about 15 years ago.

A JT with this engine WILL be the reason I trade mine in for a new one.

Inline 6 in a JT would be tight, but with all appurtenances mounted to the sides, it could fit.
It's the length of a 4 cyl. No where near the old I-6 of Jeep days past. There are a few earlier threads. I will look for them.

"The engine first surfaced over three years ago, when Allpar broke the news of a new in-line six, code-named Tornado—just like the classic Kaiser-Jeep Tornado engine. Officially, or at least semi-officially, because officially nobody will confirm the existence of a new in-line six, the naming is just a coincidence; Daimler/Fiat Chrysler has been naming new engines after airplanes for quite some time, and the Tornado, like the Hurricane, Apache, and so on, is also an aircraft. But we can trust Hemmings or Allpar to bring you to speed on the classic engine, so let’s press on.

The inline six was engineered to fit into tight spaces; it’s not just a Hurricane, sorry, GME four-cylinder with two more cylinders added on. One reason for the long time getting this engine into production was trying to keep it as small as possible in length, and we’ve been told it’s only slightly longer than the WGE 2.4 four-cylinder. To get there, Chrysler’s old and reliable iron cylinder liners had to be replaced by another process (Comau’s SmartSpray cylinder hardening process is one possibility, but not the most likely). It’s worth mentioning that saving space is not just needed to fit the engine into vehicles not originally designed for it, such as the Wrangler; it’s also handy to keep the crankshaft as short as possible, especially if higher-performance variants are desired"
