This just happened to me and did the same exact thing as you and it worked! Now let's hope it continues to work ok. Very interesting. Any new updates on this issue. Mine is a 2020. Thank!
No update but I had to do it again just 2 days ago. It's annoying but so far nothing major.

I have had this issue with both of my Fobs. What I have found is if I leave my FOB in my truck over night when it is below 32, the fob won't work. I tried to place the fob directly onto the starting button and that didn't work either. So to test my thesis, I replace both batteries and tried again, and the same problem surfaced again. Conclusion: there is definitely a defect with the newer jeep fobs being let in the vehicle overnight when it is below freezing. I never had this issue with my JK Fob.

It may be a design deficiency, but it's not a flaw. The FOB is not meant to be left out where it can freeze.

Why in the name of xxxx would you leave a FOB in a vehicle - that's asking for trouble in many ways.

Maybe you just passed along that there's a JT left sitting with the FOB in it for those who want an easy mark...

Also worth noting, if you press the lock button with your doors off it will also show Fob Not Detected and pushing the fob to the button will not work either. Supposed to be some kind of anti-theft measure. Hit the unlock button and your'e good to go.
Old post, but this happened to me today. My doors are off, so I'm going to see if I can replicate it when I get back home. I hope so. It'll make me feel a lot better if that's the cause. It said fob not detected, and would not start even with the key pressed against the button. It did start when I pressed the unlock button, so maybe it's a security feature I didn't know about until 2 ½ years into ownership!

I'd bet on it being a security thing - sort of like the garage door buttons won't work unless the button is in the run position. Prove you have the fob sort of thing.
If you have doors off and press lock, you'll still be setting the alarm if you have your hood alarm enabled.

UPDATE: I figured out the problem. We have an indoor/outdoor temp display in our house. I had the outside temp transmitter on my porch which was on the same side wall as my jeep keys. For some reason, that transmitter was interfering with all of them. I'm not sure what happened but it's been in the same spot for years with no issues. Anyway, if anyone has issues where their fobs don't work at home, check those temp transmitters.

All my fobs started acting funny yesterday. I went to lock my vehicles last night (JT and JL with 2 different fobs each) and the Jeeps weren't recognizing any of them. Never had this issue and then I saw your post pop up. The only thing I could think of is I have mine hanging on a key ring above a light/fan switch and we've been using the fan a lot. Interference maybe? I forgot to add. all 4 key fobs still blink when buttons are pressed.
