Notice: FRAM websites have been taken down. First Brands, the parent company of FRAM, is bankrupt as of September 2025. In this post, references to the FRAM engine air filter and oil filter, for the Jeep Gladiator, are shown in strike-through font. According to a Reddit post, this has also affected Champion Laboratories.

Selection of Writer's Pick

Shown below are 1) an explanation of the criteria I used to assign the designation of Writer's pick and 2) a list of products that made the cut.

Qualifying for "Writer's pick"
- Product requirements: Everything is right, nothing is wrong, it meets or exceeds OEM specifications, it beats the (remaining) competition, and is competitively priced
- These criteria are listed in order of importance, but each is a requirement
- When all else is equal, the simplicity, or complexity (red tape), of each warranty is considered
- Other mentions: Trail boss, Dealer's choice, and Simple warranty
- Products with these designations do not necessarily meet all of the criteria for Writer's pick

Current Writer's picks:
Section 1.3: AMSOIL Severe Gear 100% Synthetic Gear Lube, product codes SVLPK-EA (75W-85) and SVOPK-EA (75W-140)
Section 1.4: FRAM ULTRA AIR Premium Air Filter, SKU XGA12373
Section 1.5: Mobil 1 Extended Performance Advanced Full Synthetic Motor Oil SAE 0W-20, part number 120903
Section 1.6 (tie): Mobil 1 Extended Performance Oil Filter, part number M1C-456A (my preference), or FRAM ULTRA SYNTHETIC Oil Filter, SKU XG11665
Section 1.8: PEAK Original Equipment Technology North American Purple OAT Antifreeze + Coolant, part numbers NAP5D3 (50/50 prediluted) and NAP0D3 (concentrate)
Sections 1.9 & 1.10.2: Valvoline ATF+4 Full Synthetic Automatic Transmission Fluid, part number 822348

1.1 Brake Fluid >>> also see spec #1
Warranty on damage to other parts, for DIY job: AMSOIL >>> also see Warranty Coverage
MOPAR DOT 3 Motor Vehicle Brake Fluid; 12 fl oz size; part number 04318080AD
- This MOPAR product is the OEM original
AMSOIL DOT 3 and DOT 4 100% Synthetic Brake Fluid; 12 fl oz size; product code BFLVCN-EA
Note: This AMSOIL product is a single-point inferred equivalent to MOPAR 04318080AD; compliance with DOT 3 and SAE J1703 is recommended on page 234 of the 2020 Gladiator owner's manual, but there is no statement of compliance with SAE J1703 on the PDS; as a reminder, if DOT 3 SAE J1703 brake fluid is not available, then DOT 4 J1703/J1704 is acceptable (see internal dealer spec sheet)
Prestone Synthetic DOT 3 Brake Fluid; 12 fl oz size; part number AS400 (UPC 7 97496 87642 3)
Note: This Prestone product is a single-point inferred equivalent to MOPAR 04318080AD, and complies with DOT 3 and SAE J1703; on the Prestone product finder, this brake fluid is not specified for a Gladiator with a diesel engine (also see section 1, Brake Fluid, in my Fluid and Filter Lineup post)
Super Tech DOT 3 Brake Fluid; synthetic; 12 fl oz size; part number 1589 (UPC 0 78742 01589 7)
Note: This Super Tech product is a multipoint inferred equivalent to MOPAR 04318080AD, and complies with DOT 3 and SAE J1703; see product details at link to price for proof of fluid type and compliance
Note: I was unable to find a single aftermarket brake fluid that states compliance with MS.4574 (printed on the MOPAR label); compliance with DOT 3 and SAE J1703 is recommended in the owner's manual, but there is no mention of MS.4574 (in practice, there appears to be a de-emphasis on the MS-number for this specific fluid); my local dealer used DOT 4 J1703/J1704 (MOPAR 04549625AF, before being superseded by 68709499AA) for a brake fluid service completed in May 2023
1.2 Cabin Air Filter
MOPAR Cabin Air Filter; part number 68535621AA (replaces 68301863AA on 2018-2022 JL and JT); 20K mi; part number can vary by model year
Select a cabin air filter at RockAuto
1. Enter year, make, model, & engine, click Heat & Air Conditioning, and click Cabin Air Filter
2. Choose one of three types of filters: particulate-only, odor-reducing, or anti-bacterial
Value strategy: Start by buying the two cheapest filters and move up in price, each time you buy, until you find the right filter
1.3 Differential Fluid >>> also see spec #s 4 and 9, Front and Rear differential fluid, listed separately
Warranty on damage to other parts, for DIY job: AMSOIL, ROYAL PURPLE, Valvoline >>> also see Warranty Coverage
  • Each aftermarket option contains friction modifier additives and is suitable for use in conventional and limited slip applications
  • Friction modifiers in each aftermarket product will not harm front differential
  • For a discussion of fluid grades for front & rear differential, see section 6 in my post, Fluid Capacity & Fill Level in a Nutshell
  • For more info on "published compliance rating", see sections 7-11 in the same post
  • OEM is listed last because many dealers were recently out of stock on SAE 75W-85

tbl_1.5
- SAE 0W-20 motor oil is recommended in every version of the Gladiator owner's manual
- SAE 5W-30 motor oil is not recommended, but it is listed in the (revised) online version of the 2020 Gladiator owner's manual (see page 251, shown in OEM limits); details on 5W-30 are provided only in the table above
- For more info on this topic, see Motor Oil Compliance Funnel
- Mileage ratings are provided for comparison only; when not explicitly stated, rating equals OEM limits
- For Normal Driving, rating is hyperlinked when A) it is lower than the Label rating (2 exceptions), or B) it exceeds OEM limits
- * Same-brand filter pairing: Mobil 1 EP and Super Tech Advanced are paired with the oil filter of the same brand to determine the (lowered) mileage rating for Normal Driving (more details below)
- For Normal Driving, pairing Mobil 1 EP with a PUROLATOR MP LX11665 or WIX XP WL10010XP filter appears, on paper, to offer the best of both worlds; I will not be the one who ignores Oil Change Indicator System (OCIS) alerts
- NR = Not Rated (excluded from / not covered by motor oil product warranty)
- Column labels related to manufacturer specifications are shown in blue font
- Reminder: For motor oil, API Certified is a recommended manufacturer specification
- For API Category, RC = Resource Conserving
- Products with a special designation, such as "Writer's pick" for Mobil 1 Extended Performance 0W-20, are shown in blue, brown, or purple font
- * For AMSOIL 15K rating (on- and off-road), AMSOIL Signature Series 100% Synthetic Motor Oil must be used in conjunction with new AMSOIL oil filter (EA15K19-EA); rating when used with other oil filter brands is 12K; see additional info under Details by Product below
- * For Mobil 1 EP Normal Driving, (lowered) 10K rating applies when this oil is used with Mobil 1 EP oil filter M1C-456A
- The warranty for Pennzoil Platinum and Pennzoil UP does NOT cover severe duty
- In June 2026, RED LINE PS 0W-20 (12804) replaced RED LINE HP 0W-20 (11804) because RED LINE PS 0W-20 (12804) meets manufacturer specifications; RED LINE HP 0W-20 (11804) is still listed under Details by Product below; the RED LINE warranty is implied-only
- For RED LINE PS, two side-by-side listings are required in the Severe Duty column because RED LINE publishes this info at the product level, but not at the product line level
- As of March 2026, Valvoline EP (892058, formerly 891674) is shown in red font because it no longer shows MS-6395 on the label
- Super Tech Advanced is also shown in red font because it does not comply with MS-6395
- The warranty for Super Tech Advanced does NOT cover severe duty
- * For Super Tech Advanced Normal Driving, (lowered) 10K rating applies when this oil is used with Super Tech oil filter ST11665
- The Chrysler Pentastar 3.6L V6 24V VVT (MPFI) gasoline engine with ESS is not a Direct Injection engine
- On API website, updates to API Category table and ILSAC Standard table can lag behind info on product labels & websites
- The table above was last updated on 2026-06-21
- Also see "What is Severe Duty?" at the beginning of Fluid and Filter Lineup
Details by Product (0W-20 only)
Trail boss:
1-quart size: product code ASMQT-EA
1-gallon size: product code ASM1G-EA
- Ratings: (Label: Up to 25K mi) (Normal driving: Up to 15K mi) (Severe duty: Up to 15K mi) (Key warranty language: "Severe Service - Up to 15,000 miles...or one year, whichever comes first....Severe service conditions include...excessive idling, frequent towing, hauling, plowing or driving in dusty conditions", and "Do not exceed 12,000 miles...with other brand filters...", and "Check oil regularly to maintain proper fill levels")
- Summary: Rating of 15K mi (normal or "severe service") when used with AMSOIL oil filter EA15K19-EA, and rating of 12K mi when used with other brand of oil filter
- Additional service interval limit in all cases: "or 1 year, whichever comes first"
- AMSOIL SS motor oil product finder, PDS, and warranty
- As explained in the section called Warranty/Guarantee in this post, the (more favorable) terms in the PDS supersede, or replace, the some of the (conflicting) terms in the AMSOIL Limited Warranty - Lubricants
Note: API compliant, but not API Certified: 1) This AMSOIL motor oil does not bear the API certification starburst mark on the label; 2) on the PDS, AMSOIL states: "Use...in applications that require any of the following specifications: ...API SP (Resource Conserving), SN PLUS, SN…GM dexos1 Gen 3...;...Chrysler MS-6395; ILSAC GF-6A"; 3) post #5 in a thread on a different forum explains why manufacturers like AMSOIL and RED LINE do not always seek API licensing; 4) the specifications in the owner's manual are recommended
Recommendation: Wait until after the 5/60 power train warranty on your vehicle expires to consider using this motor oil
Note: As an option from AMSOIL's OE product line, AMSOIL OE 100% Synthetic Motor Oil SAE 0W-20 is API Certified and meets manufacturer specifications; service life aligns with OEM limits; warranty does not cover "abuse"; product code OEZQT-EA (1-quart size) or OEZ1G-EA (1-gallon size)

Note: API compliant, but not API Certified: 1) This RED LINE motor oil does not bear the API certification starburst mark on the label; 2) on the PDS, RED LINE states: "RECOMMENDED FOR: API SP/SN+/SN/SM...Chrysler...GM dexos1 Gen 3...MS-6395"; 3) post #5 in a thread on a different forum explains why manufacturers like RED LINE and AMSOIL do not always seek API licensing; 4) the specifications in the owner's manual are recommended (see quote from owner's manual, in References section, in my Key Info post); also: neither the PDS nor the RLO catalog (2021) provide an ILSAC rating for SKUs 11804 & 11805
Recommendation: Wait until after the 5/60 power train warranty on your vehicle expires to consider using this motor oil
Note: RED LINE HP was removed from the table above, in June 2026, because it is not API Certified, does not have a specific published service interval, and has an implied warranty only (it's a high-performance racing oil)
1-quart size: SKU 12804 (UPC 0 83522 12804 9)
1-gallon size: n/a
- Ratings: (Label: n/a) (Normal driving: 10K mi) (Severe duty: 4K mi) (Key warranty language: "...factory drain intervals"; warranty is implied-only (product-replacement or money-back)
- Additional service interval limit in all cases: "or 1 year, whichever comes first"
- RED LINE PS motor oil product finder and PDS
- RED LINE PS was added to the table above in June 2026, in June 2026, because it meets manufacturer specifications and has a service interval of OEM limits
Note: RED LINE has an excellent reputation among racing & high-performance vehicle enthusiasts
Simple warranty:
- The ROYAL PURPLE Limited Warranty for Consumer Lubricants does not contain the word "abuse" or any wording that has a similar meaning (excludes racing/commercial/ag)

- ROYAL PURPLE HP motor oil product finder, PDS, and warranty

- Ratings: (Label: n/a) (Normal driving: 10K mi) (Severe duty: 4K mi) (Key warranty language: "The Valvoline lubricant meets the manufacturer’s specifications", and "The engine...is operated within the limits of speed, load, temperature, etc. for which the...lubricant is specified")
- Additional service interval limit in all cases: "or 1 year, whichever comes first"

Valvoline Extended Protection Premium Full Synthetic Motor Oil SAE 0W-20; 5-quart size; part number 891674 (UPC 0 74130 04911 6)
As of March 2026, Valvoline EP (892058, formerly 891674) no longer shows MS-6395 on the label
- Meets or exceeds ILSAC GF-7A, API SQ Resource Conserving, Chrysler MS-6395, and GM dexos 1 Gen 3 (see label)
A price link is not provided for Super Tech Advanced 0W-20 because it does not comply with MS-6395
Reminder: It is strongly advised to change the motor oil & filter soon after an alert is triggered by the Oil Change Indicator System (OCIS) in your vehicle
- Super Tech Advanced Full Synthetic Motor Oil SAE 0W-20, part number WA0Z023Q (UPC 0 71621 69847 1), is API Certified, but it does not comply with material standard MS-6395; if you find online evidence of compliance with this MS-number, please DM the URL to me; Super Tech is a Walmart brand
- Ratings: (Label: 20K mi) (Normal driving: 20K mi) (Normal driving with Super Tech oil filter ST11665: 10K mi) (Severe duty: NO RATING) (Key warranty language: "The vehicle was using the appropriate...lubricant type...as recommended by the OEM or your vehicle owner’s manual", and "The vehicle has never been used...in severe conditions")
- Additional service interval limit in all cases: "or 1 year, whichever comes first"
- Super Tech Advanced motor oil product finder, PDS, and warranty
- Meets or exceeds ILSAC GF-6A, API SP Resource Conserving, and GM dexos 1 Gen 3 (not Chrysler MS-6395)
- One of the key limits in the warranty, "lubricant type", is not related at all to mileage; this leads one to believe that the oil & filter service interval, for normal driving, can be 20K mi as long as the vehicle is not subjected to severe conditions
- Always change the motor oil & filter soon after an alert is triggered by the Oil Change Indicator System (OCIS) in your vehicle
MOPAR MaxPro+ Full Synthetic Motor Oil SAE 0W-20, 5-liter size; part number 68524013AA, is available on the MOPAR eStore and AllMoparParts.com; this motor oil meets or exceeds ILSAC GF-6A, API SP, and MS-6395, but (naturally) does not meet GM dexos 1 Gen 3; this motor oil does not have a mileage rating printed on the label, but it is rated here as aligning with OEM limits; the label is trilingual (English/French/Spanish); this motor oil is available in the U.S. through dealerships and some online channels; this product is not listed in the motor oil specifications table, above, because it is common knowledge that Jeep dealerships use Pennzoil Platinum
Motor oil & oil filter for diesel engine are out of scope

- Mileage ratings are provided for comparison only; when not explicitly stated, rating equals OEM limits
- For Normal Driving, rating is hyperlinked when it is lower than the Label rating or exceeds OEM limits
- Each mileage rating is based on product label, warranty statement, and marketing information available online; for the Jeep Gladiator, be especially mindful of 1) OEM limits and 2) alerts triggered by the Oil Change Indicator System (OCIS)
- Since the First Brands bankruptcy, information on FRAM has not been updated; it is being kept in this table for reference
- HP/HD = High Performance / Heavy Duty
- For AMSOIL 15K rating (on- and off-road), new AMSOIL oil filter must be used in conjunction with AMSOIL Signature Series 100% Synthetic Motor Oil (ASMQT-EA); otherwise, rating aligns with OEM limits
- * For MOPAR (OEM), 68191349AC (most recent part number variant as listed on MOPAR eStore) is listed on RockAuto as an "alternate inventory number" for 68191349AA (original part number, since superseded)
- The Mopar Basic Limited Warranty covers damage to other parts only when the covered part is installed by a dealer
- MOPAR MO-349 (generic retail version of 68191349AC) does not have a mileage rating
- For FRAM XG11665, Mobil 1 EP M1C-456A, MOPAR (OEM) 68191349AC, WIX WL10010, and WIX XP WL10010XP, country of manufacture, as of October 2019, is posted on BITOG
- Products with a special designation, such as "Writer's pick", are shown in blue font
- Writer's pick is/was a tie between Mobil 1 EP M1C-456A and FRAM ULTRA SYNTHETIC XG11665; I prefer Mobil 1 EP M1C-456A, but FRAM XG11665 is/was also a highly-rated option
- Reminder: As stated on page 197 of the 2020 Gladiator owner's manual, the oil and filter must be changed at every oil change

- Also see "What is Severe Duty?" at the beginning of Fluid and Filter Lineup

Note: FRAM SYNTHETIC ENDURANCE Oil Filter, SKU FE11665, has a published rating of 25K mi, but the PDS also says: "Follow recommended change intervals as outlined in your owner's manual." This means that the rating is adjusted from 25K mi to 10K mi.

Notes on aftermarket options:
  • Outside of the U.S., please be mindful of A) consumer protection laws and B) using an aftermarket product while under warranty
  • Inside of the U.S., it is acceptable to use an aftermarket product supported by a statement of compliance with recommended or required OEM specifications
    • In addition to A) compliance with OEM specifications and B) price, the reputation of both the manufacturer and the product should weigh into your buying decision
  • When in doubt, use the OEM (MOPAR) option
1.8 Radiator Fluid >>> also see spec #8
Warranty on damage to other parts, for DIY job: PEAK Purple, Prestone Platinum Purple & Prestone Max Purple, ZEREX G30 >>> also see Warranty Coverage
Note: Based on guidance from some of the experts on this site, the cooling system should be flushed every five years for normal driving; if your vehicle is used for severe duty (off-road use and/or trailer towing), the service interval can be 50% (or less) of normal driving; some members of this forum who frequently go off-road and/or tow a trailer do a cooling system flush annually
- The owner's manual says 10Y / 150K mi, but this service interval is for ideal operating conditions
- As mentioned in the post above, an annual pH test can tell you whether the coolant has become acidic and needs to be replaced; a pH test is a very useful tool, especially as a vehicle ages; suggested coolant pH = 8.5 +/- 1.0

Coolant Compatible with OAT but Not Specifically Compliant with MS.90032 or MS-12106
  • The characteristics of each of the following two Prestone options are similar, but Prestone part number AF2700 includes compatibility with POAT (unimportant for a Gladiator), is a non-2EH formula, and is offered by a different retailer at a different price
The warranty terms for the following two Prestone options are similar to those of PEAK Purple, above; off-road vehicle use voids the warranty
The following aftermarket option is specified, for a 2020 Jeep Gladiator, on the Prestone product finder; this product is a general equivalent, a single-point inferred equivalent, and a multipoint inferred equivalent to MOPAR 68163849AC:

tbl_1.10.1
- Column labels related to manufacturer specifications are shown in blue font
- The list order within each section of this table is MOPAR, ZF (licensor), then other brands
- Guidance on effect of DIY fluid change is based on informal survey described below
- Compliance with DEXRON VI and Toyota WS is provided for additional context
- For claimed equivalent aftermarket products, also look for published compliance with ZF LifeguardFluid 9
- MOPAR 68218925AB is an exact equivalent to ZF LifeguardFluid 9
- The price link for ZF LifeguardFluid 8 is omitted because this fluid is not an exact equivalent to MOPAR 68218925AB
- As shown below, gallon size is also available for each claimed equivalent aftermarket product except HP ATF GREEN and ROYAL PURPLE MAX ATF (each offers a 6 X 1-quart multipack)
- MOPAR and products with a special designation are shown in blue or purple font
Recommendation: Wait until after the power train warranty on your vehicle expires to consider DIY and/or using a claimed equivalent
Details by Product

ZF-approved equivalents:
(see doc #1 in ATF Equivalents)
Warranty on damage to other parts: MOPAR 8 & 9 Speed ATF, only when installed by a dealer (damage to other parts is not covered for DIY jobs) >>> also see Warranty Coverage
  • According to an informal survey of service managers at a major chain of dealerships, changing the fluid for the automatic transmission oneself (DIY) will void the warranty
Sizes listed here are either 1 quart or 1 liter
MOPAR 8 & 9 Speed ATF Automatic Transmission Fluid; 1-quart size; part number 68218925AB; exact equivalent to ZF LifeguardFluid 9 (see doc #1 in ATF Equivalents)
Honda ATF-Type 3.1; 1-quart size; part number 08200-9017; exact equivalent to ZF LifeguardFluid 9 (see doc #1 in ATF Equivalents)
ZF LifeguardFluid 9; 1-liter size; part number AA01.500.001 (EAN 4 053202 268514)
- ZF approval number ZF005946 is the de facto material standard for ZF LifeguardFluid 9 (AA01.500.001), MOPAR 8 & 9 Speed ATF Automatic Transmission Fluid (68218925AB), and a limited number of other (ZF-approved) vehicle manufacturer brands of ATF; each OEM brand of ATF associated with this approval number is equivalent to the others listed by ZF (see doc #1 in ATF Equivalents), and may be used in the ZF 8HP50 / Chrysler TorqueFlite 850RE automatic transmission
Note: ZF LifeguardFluid 8; 1-liter size; part number S671 090 312 (EAN 4 053202 268477) is not an exact equivalent to MOPAR 68218925AB, but it is the original ZF-approved (see doc #1 in ATF Equivalents) and ZF-branded lubricant for the ZF 8HP50 / Chrysler 850RE automatic transmission
Aftermarket options:
Warranty on damage to other parts, for DIY job: AMSOIL SS FE ATF, ROYAL PURPLE MAX ATF, Valvoline EP ATF & Valvoline MAXLIFE MV ATF >>> also see Warranty Coverage
  • See "Notes on aftermarket options" in section 1.7 above
  • According to an informal survey of service managers at a major chain of dealerships, changing the fluid for the automatic transmission oneself (DIY) will void the warranty
Sizes listed here are 1 quart, 1 gallon, 6 quarts (1.5 gallons), or 12 quarts (3 gallons)
AMSOIL Signature Series Fuel-Efficient 100% Synthetic Automatic Transmission Fluid
1-quart size: product code ATLPK-EA
1-gallon size: product code ATL1G-EA
- This fluid is a claimed equivalent to MOPAR 68218925AB, as listed in the AMSOIL Data Sheet
- Clarification needed: The section in the Data Sheet on the 180K mi Vegas taxi trial should include the full product name of the "Multi-Vehicle" ATF+4 in the section title or as a subtitle in bold font; "Multi-Vehicle" is mentioned twice in this section, but leaving a reference to "Multi-Vehicle" ATF+4 out of the title itself can have the effect of conflating "Multi-Vehicle" and "Fuel-Efficient" (two distinct ATFs); being of the same product line (like two brothers) is not proof that one will perform as well as the other; this need for (product vs. product line) clarification, in the title, is similar to the case of ROYAL PURPLE gear oil (in section 1.3, above), in which the same photo of comparative (Synerlec) wear test results (for a single fluid) is displayed in the Product Data Sheets of at least three different fluids
Note: AMSOIL OE Fuel-Efficient 100% Synthetic Automatic Transmission Fluid, OTLQT-EA (1-quart size) and OTL1G-EA (1-gallon size), also lists claimed equivalence to MOPAR 68218925AB, but does not list ZF LifeguardFluid 9 (AA01.500.001); AMSOIL SS FE ATF, shown above, lists a severe service life that is double that of AMSOIL OE FE ATF
High Performance Lubricants HP ATF GREEN Synthetic Transmission Fluid
6 X 1-quart size: part number ATFGREEN-Q
12 X 1-quart size: part number ATFGREEN-Q

- This fluid is a claimed equivalent to ZF LifeguardFluid 9, as listed on both the Valvoline website and the back label
- The MOPAR part number on the PDS needs to be updated from 68218925AA to 68218925AB; especially in the case of ATF for the automatic transmission, compliance documentation needs to be 100% correct; as noted above, MOPAR 68218925AB is an exact equivalent to ZF LifeguardFluid 9, and ZF LifeguardFluid 9 is listed on the PDS

Note: Pennzoil Platinum LV Multi-Vehicle ATF Automatic Transmission Fluid, part numbers 550041916 (1-quart size) and 550045231 (1-gallon size), has limited availability online; also, the MOPAR part number on the PDS needs to be updated from 68218925AA to 68218925AB; especially in the case of ATF for the automatic transmission, compliance documentation needs to be 100% correct
Note: For ATF in the automatic transmission, two other compliance cross-checks used by experienced and knowledgeable members of this forum are GM DEXRON VI and Toyota WS; these additional points of verification allow us to verify (claimed) equivalence to more than one (similar) vehicle OEM standard

Notes on MOPAR eStore and parts.mopargenuineparts.com (MoparGenuineParts):
  • MOPAR eStore is the official MOPAR online store for Stellantis/FCA/Jeep
    • MOPAR eStore has higher parts prices, but offers "free" shipping by referring you to a dealer (with the part in stock) near you
  • parts.mopargenuineparts.com (MoparGenuineParts) is an independent business
    • While parts prices can be much lower, shipping costs are prohibitively high
    • While parts.mopargenuineparts.com is not used in this article (for prices), their website used to be faster than MOPAR eStore (until April 2025, when MOPAR made improvements to their website), and can be useful for checking information on an OEM part

4.4 Value Options
1. Why Super Tech? Whenever possible, I included Super Tech (a Walmart brand) as the value option in this post because Walmart stores are almost everywhere, no membership is required, and each product is positioned in the good enough (or better) range.
2. Four Super Tech products made the cut: motor oil, oil filter, brake fluid, and gear lubricant.
- Motor oil: On paper, Super Tech Advanced 0W-20 does not comply with material standard MS-6395; however, it is a GM dexos 1 Gen 3 licensed engine oil, and it appears that this GM standard is more stringent than MS-6395 (see post #25 in this thread on jlwranglerforums.com). If I were pinching pennies, I would feel comfortable using Super Tech Advanced 0W-20.
- Oil filter: Super Tech ST11665 barely makes the cut in more ways than one. If it fails, you get your three bucks back but nothing more (implied warranty only). The mileage warranty aligns with OEM limits. The published filtering efficiency is 99%, but the micron rating is not published. This filter is not for everyone, but it might become a good option as our vehicles age and we're not as concerned about treating our engines like a clean room.
- Brake fluid: MOPAR 04318080AD is the only brake fluid, of which I am aware, that complies with MS.4574. A reputable aftermarket brand can be considered if it complies with the two specifications stated in the owner's manual: DOT 3 and SAE J1703. Super Tech DOT 3 brake fluid complies with DOT 3 and SAE J1703. If DOT 3 is unavailable, DOT 4 J1703/J1704 is acceptable.
- Differential fluid: (Please see update below.) Super Tech Full Synthetic Gear Lubricant complies with API GL-5. In terms of published compliance, this puts it on par with Mobil 1 and Royal Purple. There is no published MS-compliance to speak of, but it gets good reviews by both the general public and some experts on this forum (if buying "off the shelf"). Unlike the name brands, Super Tech doesn't say anything about friction modifiers (for Trac-Lok) on the front label. Have no fear, because a careful review of the back label reveals that "anti-friction agents" are included. If I hit the trail every weekend, I will consider using this gear oil during a service interval. For anyone interested in doing a write-up, lab results on this gear oil would be an interesting post.
Update in April 2025: After reviewing every available warranty on products listed in this document, I discovered that the warranty statement for this product only covers damage to other parts for the engine. I will no longer consider using this product, even as a value option. Also see warranty info in section 1.3 in this document.
- Other fluids & filters: Other fluids and filters, such as engine air filter and power steering fluid, are either unavailable from Super Tech or do not make the grade for a Gladiator. Super Tech does not (yet) make an engine air filter for the Gladiator. They have a power steering fluid, but I will not use or recommend any power steering fluid unless it complies with MS-11655. As for the transmission and T-case, I will (also) only use fluids that meet manufacturer specifications. For radiator fluid, PEAK Purple (purple not violet) antifreeze + coolant is an excellent option for those of us who do not take our vehicles off-road. For the many who do hit the trail (and when the price is lower), MOPAR antifreeze / coolant is the better option.

5. References

5.1 Motor Oil Organizations & Standards
- This section relates to section 1.5 Motor Oil, above, and to my post on High Mileage Motor Oil
  1. API (American Petroleum Institute); "API Certified" is a recommended manufacturer specification; API motor oil standards are backward compatible
  2. Chrysler or FCA material standard MS-6395; this standard is a recommended manufacturer specification; MS-6395 is not as stringent as GM dexos 1 Gen 3 (see reference to post #12 in thread on BITOG, in my post on High Mileage Motor Oil); Shell Oil (Co) Inc, now Shell USA Inc and parent company of Pennzoil, was the first supplier listed in Table 7: Engineering Approved Source List, on page 6 of the MS-6395 material standard requirements document, published/revised in May 2013
    1. As of May 2026, the warranty for Pennzoil Platinum and Pennzoil Ultra Platinum does NOT cover severe duty
  3. ILSAC (International Lubricants Standardization and Approval Committee); ILSAC motor oil standards are backward compatible; other variations of the description of this acronym exist, but the Mobil 1 description of ILSAC is used here; as a committee, ILSAC works with API and does not have its own website
  4. GM dexos 1 Gen 3 (General Motors material standard dexos 1 Generation 3); this standard is provided for additional context on motor oil, including rigorous seal testing; not a single API-licensed, high-mileage motor oil option meets this standard
  5. PQIA (Petroleum Quality Institute of America); advice on motor oil labeling
  6. SAE (SAE International); "SAE 0W-20" is a recommended manufacturer specification; formerly Society of Automotive Engineers (1917-2006), and originally Society of Automobile Engineers (1905-1917)
5.2 ATF+4 Licensing
- This section relates to sections 1.9 Transfer Case Fluid and 1.10.2 ATF for MANUAL Transmission, above, and to my post on Fluid Equivalence
  1. ATF+4 is a trademark, owned by FCA US LLC / Chrysler, assigned to licensed brands of this automatic transmission fluid (for the transfer case and MANUAL transmission)
  2. According to Google AI, it appears that FCA US LLC has outsourced this QA licensing program to the Center for Quality Assurance to act as the independent administrator
  3. CQA (Center for Quality Assurance): The list of FCA-licensed brands of ATF+4 is published by the CQA
    1. Each brand on the list meets FCA/Chrysler material standard MS-9602, has undergone independent testing, and has been licensed to display the ATF+4 trademark

Curious as to why you chose not to use the Mopar Parts dealer that is a site sponsor here?
Update on 2025-01-08: All links to MOPAR prices have been changed to the MOPAR eStore.
Update on 2025-04-04: The MOPAR eStore is not slow anymore. I have made some minor edits in my original reply, below, to reflect this improvement.

Original reply:

Good point. Shipping cost is a problem with parts.mopargenuineparts.com (MoparGenuineParts). The MOPAR eStore arranges for "free" shipping by matching your order to a dealer near you. The dealer will not necessarily be the closest dealer, but it beats paying more for shipping than for the part itself.

I originally chose parts.mopargenuineparts.com because I had only used their website to check parts and prices (and the website is was much faster). I will switch all of the OEM links to MOPAR eStore because high shipping cost is a deal-breaker.

I selected each seller based on price, accuracy, performance, and reputation. Accuracy relates to getting the part number right (Walmart got one wrong). Performance relates to how well the website works. Again, the website parts.mopargenuineparts.com is was faster than MOPAR eStore, so it is great for checking OEM parts. As for reputation, a site like fcpeuro.com (for LifeguardFluid 9) makes the cut because I have read about them on this forum. On the other hand, you will never see me list Home Depot, for brake fluid, because their focus is not on auto parts.

Thanks for the feedback.
