I'm not Rick crawlin'. At least not that I'll admit to...

Now Rikki mermaid, I'll install a snorkle for that!

Im 55 and still drive manuals, so does my wife! In fact the only auto in our driveway including our sons 2 cars is my 74 Ranchero!
My Gladiator will be auto though as the diesel only comes with auto when they arrive in Oz next year.

Completely agreed. I've had high-end PDK, DSG, DCT, ABC123, etc. transmissions, and have the ZF 8 speed in our Durango R/T. Other than the Durango (which is only fun in straight line) I always feel there's something missing from the experience when the car shifts on its own. My YJ was manual shift and I look forward to getting back into a Jeep with a stick again.
Remember the YJ use to have that annoying yellow light to tell you when to shift? My XJ has it as well, but its broke because in 3 years since buying it on Craiglist I have only seen it once. I have not driven a JL but I assume that is gone now.

I do remember that little light. So easy to ignore... :giggle:

I test drove a jl with a manual transmission... I bumped the hazard lights twice while shifting , I really wanted to like it coming from my wrx but the gearing was weird . Felt like a 3 speed + three overdrive gears , I will be getting the auto so I can run bigger tires with the tow package , my 2 cents

Seems to me more age related than anything else (no offense intended). I see the same with others around your age. I’m 15 yrs younger but can’t see myself without a manual truck or car even in 20 yrs.
Maybe, but the other way around. I am 71, have driven auto latter part of my life only because it is more or less a necessity with most cars and trucks not offering manual. But nearly everyone of my contemporaries learned stick early on. Vehicles with stick I have owned or driven at work: '56 Chevy, '47 International KB5, '65 Chevy 2-ton truck, '43 Dodge WC-63 6x6, '71 Mercedes 280SL, '74 Chevy Vega, '79 Ford Courier, '85 Ford Escort, '82 Nissan pickup, '88 Ford F150.

This one (Gladiator) is going to be my retirement fun vehicle, and for that reason, I am going to get a manual. If I have to explain why ...

I did test drive a Gladiator with auto. The "manual" shift mode was most unsatisfying. Very restrictive on when the truck allows you to shift. Gives a message on screen: "Shift not allowed".

GM does a horrible job of programming the auto's to go pedal to brain interface...double downshifts on hills where only one is needed, hunting etc. One of my long long standing GM-ism's that i can't believe they still haven't fired the engineers responsible for all that set up. I could go on about their front seat comfort and about 4-5 more gm-ism's that still surprise me exist with all the repeated complaints and even write-ups in the magazine comparisons etc.

Anywhooo, the pentastar 8-spd combo is incredible, totally different than what that colorado will be so don't think they will be the same, they won't. Likely one of the best set up's on the road period.

the pentastar 8-speed is amazing, faster, more efficient, intuitive set up, gas pedal, to brain, shift points and when etc. likely best set up auto i've driven (142,000 kms experience on my 2014 ram till it got wrote off in november)

but i would have bought that ram with a manual if i could have...shouldn't have to explain why but i guess we do

you got guys just looking at the numbers, faster, more efficient etc. and then adding in 'why would you want to shift?' which can also be read as 'why would you want to be more engaged and apart of the driving experience?' or can also be read as 'why wouldn't you want to be the laziest you possibly could be behind the wheel of a 2 ton machine?' ;)

the best part is...you simply cannot make a wrong choice with these trucks, the auto is as good as they come, and the manual is surely sweet enough, i'm so glad to have that option, closing in on 5000 smiles per miles now and wouldn't change a thing :)

you couldn't give me the automatic ;)

well ok you could, but i'd sell it and go buy a manual:rock:

46 years old, because apparently that matters

I'm 38 and I went for the manual, got about 3k on it so far, still happy with it. Before that I drove a stick Miata as my daily for 6 years, not sure why everybody here seems to assume that none of us (relatively) younger folks drive stick around here, heh.

What your really missing getting the manual is the ability to not work hard in stop and go traffic. I can't imagine with how good the auto transmissions are today why anyone would want a manual.

(And i learned to drive a manual when I was 11 and I'm near 60 now. My first new Jeep CJ7 I ordered and purchased from a dealer in 1977 I ordered a standard ....)

But you couldn't give me a standard transmission in any vehicle now......Even Ferrari's gone auto....
I am in the middle on this one. I love my 5 speed Miata. There is just something fun about downshifting and being able to pick what gear you will have when you are sliding thru a corner. Paddle shifters just do not do it for me. But for a daily driver I don't want a clutch for stop and go traffic. I had a stick on a CJ5 and an 87 Trooper but at 52 there will be no offroad activity I will get into where the Manual will be significantly better than a modern automatic.
