Just throwing this out there, coming from Southern California in August to do some wheeling in Moab. We will be doing Fins n Things, Poison Spider, Hell’s Revenge, Top of the World, and probably Chicken Corners while we’re there. If anyone has some days off in that timeframe and wants to tag along I’d enjoy some extra company.

Word of advice for Moab in August: Get up at 4 am, be off the trail by 11 am.
Get a hotel or Air BNB with a pool.
Bring a vehicle mounted awning or EZ up for shade.
If you think you brought enough water you're wrong.

Absolutely. We go to Moab until May, and don’t go back until October. You can do it, but @Sweetums is more than right. Gallons and gallons of water and shade. If you break something, you need portable shade to be out there fixing it.

Water rule: One gallon per person per day, assuming you are not doing any strenuous activity.
You should carry at least two days of water for everyone at all times.

Best place to get water: https://maps.app.goo.gl/f5kkDNB9pA1dA7988 (I stop every morning and get fresh water in all our containers.)

Oh, and long pants and long sleeves. I know it sounds nuts, but you will be more comfortable with lightweight, loose clothing that covers you and blocks the sun, you are going to be Extra Crispy if you go with shorts and tank tops.

Good advice, I appreciate that. I live in Southern California so I’m not shy to 110+ temps. Does it suck at times? Hell yeah it does, but it’s what I’m used to. With 5 trails planned in 5 days there’s no reason we should be out late but things always happen.

I have several of those in white and light blue, and a couple of them even have hoodies on them. I’ve been burned even in 50 degree temps being out by the lake for 8 hours, these shirts are worth their weight in gold.

Funny story about that trout, took my son and his friend that day, his friend got snagged on an old line. When he reeled it in, there was a gold kastmaster on the end of it. I tied it on my line and hit my limit in the first 45 minutes ?

Good stuff. Sounds like a fun day. I haven’t kept one in a while, and have only used flies for a few years. We did keep some stocker rainbows in telluride last summer, but the lakes freeze to the bottom every winter, so they’re seasonal farm animals there. What doesn’t come out, dies anyway. But in rivers, I try to leave them there.

I don’t eat fish, can’t stand seafood. My son tears them up though. So whatever I catch he takes. I’m more of a bass guy than trout, but it’s a family trip every year so I make the best of it.

I miss catching bass, walleye and northern. But I don’t live in those areas anymore. Trout on fly rods are a blast. Spinning gear might be an unfair advantage for trout. :) But I’m sure I’ll be berated for that opinion by someone. :) just my opinion.

I hear ya. Bass are stupid fish, and can be easy to catch at times where trout takes a little more finesse. Lots of lakes in California for bass, I would definitely miss it if I moved somewhere else. I think bass fishing keeps me active and it’s more fun than throwing some power bait out and cracking a beer while I wait. I like to stay busy when fishing.
