I've rented compass and Cherokee trailhawks and thought they were both really well appointed. The compass and even the Cherokee felt a bit small inside. The bronco sport is a pretty capable crossover however unpopular that opinion may be.

It's a little big longer than he wants. He's looking for that short overall length

Wrangler and Renegade are both 166" long, even Compass is 174"
Well Dad is pretty particular on his sizing I suppose. Can’t say “I” would notice the 8” difference. I will say this though, if the Renegade is what makes your Dad happy then give him your encouragement and let him enjoy.
Why deny “his” choice in the first place? The man’s 75 and wants what he wants. Go for it.

Cherokee Trailhawk, or Bronco Sport. Both have great AWD systems. Can't blame him for not wanting to daily a Wrangler.
I can attest that my wife’s 2 door JL was a lesson in awareness on the highways in a crosswind.

We rented a Renegade Trailhawk and drove all over Colorado a few years ago and even took it off-road a bit there and in Moab. We also rented a 2 door Rubicon in Moab for a day. After that trip, I really wanted a Renegade, but ended up keeping the Outback I had at the time.

For comfortable every day vehicle that is still off-road capable, most would be perfectly happy with the Renegade as long as it is a Trailhawk.
