Mine is like that if I don’t sort of slam the tailgate up. If I close gently, the same gap. Man, was I relieved when it shut correctly! Whew!

Same for me as above. Only the left side was latching, as far as I could tell. I actually moved a bed full of stuff from my old house with it like that, glad it held. Once I noticed it, I wondered if it was put together incorrectly or misaligned. Took one really good two-hand-spread-wide SLAM and it closed even and symmetrically. Now it does it with less effort :)
