I did a thing this week…. Getting a divorce, possibly having a midlife crisis.. My parents had a 1977 L48 Auto Corvette when I was a little kid in the 80’s and I’ve always loved the looks of the C3’s, soooooooo, I bought a 1977 L82 4 speed. Everything is orriginal, all numbers match, I am one of 4 owners and was handed ALL the paperwork from 1978 to now. 69000 actual miles, and out of 49000 Corvettes built in 1977, only 9000 were L82’s with a 4 speed… so I’d imagine it’s fairly rare these days

Plan is to restore it and keep it as orriginal as possible

My neighbor had a 1977 auto. Him and his wife pretty much hung out with Corvette people. Never talk to them much. They were nice though. When they had issues, I became their best friend. I don't recall what motor he had, just that it was a dog. My 88 5.0 Mustang had more gusto.

If it had an auto it was an L-48, small block 350 that made around 180 HP.. the L-82 was a small block as well, but had different intake, bigger valves, different cam, and made 220 HP.

Nice ride. Late C3's get a lot of hate but the swoopy lines and bulges in the right spots have aged well.

Talk to your divorce attorney and make sure you're protected so that in the end she can't force a sale. I know lots of guys who "sold" their toys to friends on paper...

My closest friend in HS had a brown on brown L48 auto. I believe a 76. Pretty but had no go. I dont belive it made anywhere near 180 hp. But it was a lot of fun. Till wrapped around a tree on a wet night.

That sums up pretty much anything American from the malaise-era, especially GM. IE: small block V8s that make (drumroll) 170hp at the crank and lose 20-30% of that through the torque converter and smog equipment.

Vokswagon beetles were faster than my factory ordered 1978 Ford F-150 8 ft bed pickup automatic with a 351 M engine. It put out a whopping 163HP.

OP - Nice looking C3. All vettes are nice. Have fun restoring it to the way you want.

It is way underpowered by today’s standards. I’ve been toying with engine Ideas, I’d like to keep the original small block in it, but if I bore it and stroke it and put a mild cam in it, no one would know
