Hey everyone. I’ll be doing a long road trip taking me from TN back home to Long Island. I’ve never used a cargo carrier when I was a NY resident, but on this trip I’ll be using an in hitch carrier that, when it is packed, will obscure my license plate when viewed dead on. I have no front plate, as in TN it is not required. We’ll have to go through a lot of cashless tolls where we’ll be billed later through our license plate. Does anyone have any tips, tricks, etc?

In most states it is illegal to obscure the license plate from clear view. Not all states enforce it strongly.
They make brackets to mount the plate to most hitch carriers.

Don't forget to put a light on it.

Seems like you could add some temporary lights to the back of the cargo carrier and move your license plate (lots of options on amazon). Could probably even wire them to use your trailer hitch wiring so it's fully reusable/ removeable

Enjoy the free trip.

Or get yourself an ezPass transponder.

Back when I had my TJ, I used to use a hitch mounted cargo carrier for all kinds of stuff as there wasn't much room in the back for gear. The problem is loaded up it would block my taillights and license plate. So I bought some cheap trailer lights, drilled a couple holes and mounted them to the cargo carrier. I then wired them to a 4 wire pigtail and plugged them into the trailer hook up for quick disconnect purposes. I would then unscrew the plate from the back and mount to the carrier. I never had an issue doing it this way.

I added a set of lights to a "Hitch Haul" receiver rack that plugged in to trailer light plugin. I didn't mount tag on it but used it for different Jeep (XJ) so non issue.
Reflective tape on one is a recommendation for D.A. drivers too. I've had a few of them hit in past. One on my LJ during hunting season ? one I built so no damage to it. Not so much for the other vehicle.....

I just came back to FL from NY myself (stayed in TN on way down, lol) as I am originally from Long Island as well. Not sure if TN has EZ-Pass or an equivalent but in FL we have SunPass which recently became compatible with the EZ-Pass system throughout the northeast but you might want to see if you have something like that available if you haven't already. Doesn't solve the license plate issue of course, but one less thing to worry about if you can.

Definitely relocate the license plate to a visible location w/light.. EZ Pass NJ is accepted in multiple states .. MD, De, Pa, NJ, NY . check there site: https://www.ezpassnj.com/en/home/index.shtml
BTW.. PA charges extra for the pay by TAG # (up to 45%) over EZ Pass use .. PA mails invoices to your address.

Thanks for the tips everyone. I used EZPass as a resident, but it’s not an option as a non-resident. At least not to my knowledge. I think they still have to view my tags. I will be removing the carrier a few times at different points and am concerned I’d forget to put it back on the truck, and BAM!!!
