On a similiar topic, where in the manual does it say how many quarts it needs? Got a 23 and searching for the word quart only finds quarter.
Search for "FLUID CAPACITIES". Will be in the Technical Specifications chapter

Protection comes from the oil film strength - and that comes from the additive package the oil MAKER puts in the oil when it's made.
many moons ago on Rubicon Owners Forum there where recommendations to use high mileage Mobil synth oil b/c of the additives being better.

any thoughts on doing something like that for “betterness”

…….0W-20 grade oil is the all markets global spec'd oil for these engines to even include the Middle East. No other weight grades are listed or recommended.
I’m going to go against the grain here but I firmly believe that when the Jeep is used hard as in severe duty a slightly higher viscosity is a better choice. The pressure to use as light a weight oil as possible is all due to CAFE requirements by the manufacturers. The OEM’s don’t give a $hit about your engine once it is out of warranty.

To that end I’m using 5W-30 Penzoil Ultra and changing oil at 5000 miles…

In the Middle East they use 5W-30 BTW not 0W-20..

But this is a free country so feel free to use what ever you’d like.

If you’re lean toward a thicker oil (5/30) has anything to do with viscosity numbers being higher than 0/20, then yes it will obviously. If diving deeper into that to actually seeing how the numbers work as the engine puts on mileage, you’ll see your viscosity drop or become thinner than when it was just poured in fresh.

I’m a numbers hound that runs a sample of the changed oil to the lab every time I change my oil on any of the components and I found that if I mixed three 0/20’s with two 5/30’s by the time you’ve put on your 5000 miles or so, the viscosity ends up being the same as if you’ve just poured in your five 0/20 quarts.

So if a fresh bottle of 0/20 starts off with 7.5 viscosity and ends as 6 or lower, doing the mix as I said above will have that viscosity end at 7.5

It doesn’t take long for viscosity to drop but it does level out quickly. Things that thin it are fuel mix/ running the engine on super short trips etc. Coolant leak will actually raise viscosity which gives the lab a reason to check for it.

There’s lots of debate as to thicker viscosity “protecting more” but I’d say it at least helps quiet the little noises a bit more.
I have used 5w30 on my 0w20 engines for the last 20 years. Now with variable valve cams and cylinder shut down motors that depend on the oil to be hydraulic fluid as well as lubrication, I am sticking with what ever the manufacturer recommends. 0w16 kind of worries me, but has been around a while too.

They use 0W-20 globally with no other call out.

Attached is the Middle East OM. In both the English portion and Arabic (PDF pg 559), Only 0W-20 is listed, nothing else.

if you have source data thay says otherwise, I am open to see it.

^^^ I’ll take your word for it but I remember reading that 5w-30 was the oil for the Middle East. I’m on vacation with my family so I’m not going to spend the time trying to find it..
Have a great night!
