Hey All,

Noticed a weird noise on my 23' JT Auto Trans Gasser with just over 12k.

Only notice it with the windows up, radio off and at speeds where you aren't getting too much road noise/wind noise, else it is drowned out.

Almost sounds like a mechanical toad trilling at quarter speed. I know that sounds nutty but it's the only thing I can think to equate it to.

Only happens when the vehicle has been sitting enough to cool off, happens for the first few minutes of driving then either stops or becomes unnoticeably quiet.

The noise is only during acceleration, it even stops/silences for the second or two it takes during shifts.

It is not noticeable from the outside (according to my wife and a good friend)

I change oil at 3k and send it away, all numbers look great, nothing on the rise.

I've tried recording under the hood to capture lifter tick or other engine noises and I don't pick up any noise.

No warning lights, no power dips, no weird shifts or shudders, nothing seems to be leaking or loose.

Next step is the Mechanic, but anyone have an idea or item to check before I have to write a check to have it looked at?

Does it increase or decrease with rpms?

Just a wild ass guess here…. My first thought was….. a chirp from a bearing that’s going bad. But where?? That is the question…..
If you can’t hear it from the outside… itā€˜s either not bad enough yet or its something else…. Off the top of my head…if you increase you climate controls / fan speed, etc…does the noise change?

Do you offroad much in water/mud/etc? Back in my younger years…. and running thru all those big puddles…..šŸ˜†ā€¦. that water was terrible on bearings. If it wasn’t my truck but somone else’s …… Alternator, A/C compressors, steering pumps, bearings going bad regularly.

Some increase/decrease with RPM yes, but thew engine continues to run even during shifting and no weird numbers on the oil checks.

I don't typically use climate but I'll try that.

Ive run through 2 puddles in two years that have just kissed the bumper, hopefully not from that lol!

i too get a loud whining under hard acceleration. it usually stops around 6000 rpm. it starts out audible and clear but rises in intensity up to a level of annoyance. it sounds like jjjjjoooohhHHHNNNN!!!!! oh wait i'm sorry it's just my bride.

The bearings will often chirp mostly at start up. Once the grease inside the bearing warms up (gets thin), it’ll stop chirping until the next time (grease cools down, etc). Eventually…. the chirping will either get worse or go away completely.
The pulley will start to hiccup…..you won’t necessarily know it happens.
When the pully hiccups, well now…you’re putting wear & tear on the belt itself.

I can’t say that’s what you’re experiencing…but just thought I’d throw that out there. šŸ˜†

I'm in the same boat with mine too. I get a noticeable "whistle/whine" under acceleration but it immediately stops the moment I let off the throttle. I thought maybe I had RF interference with all of my accessories hooked to the battery because it sounds that high pitched. I've unhooked everything (i.e. winch leads/solar controller leads/SwitchPro), turned off the radio and A/C but it doesn't make a difference. It's mostly noticed like yours inside the cabin with the windows up. Again though, the exact moment I let off the throttle it stops. Maybe it's a pulley bearing under load?

Unlike you though, at idle with the hood open I hear a whistle right at the alternator (from what I can tell as the sound kind of carriers thru the engine bay) I'm wondering if the alternator is going out or it's a bearing somewhere in that vicinity. Honestly, I just wish it would get so loud of something goes out so I can finally know what it is.

I'll follow your thread to stay tuned.

Sorry for the delay, I broke down and bought some woreless microphones, this short, the microphone is located on near front control arm facing the oil pan.

This will give you and idea of the sound I'm having. You might have to watch a time or two, sometimes it's stick out to me, sometimes not.

Going to try a few more locations to have more proof and make an appointment.
